Treating Scaly Leg Mites in 60+ Birds

The person she gives credit to on her website is a Ph.D., not a vet. :idunno
True, my mistake. After reading about him, though, he is quite knowledgeable about poultry, and is on staff at UConn Dept of Animal Science since 1981 and is the Connecticut state poultry agent.

My step daughter is a vet, and knows very little about chickens. Most vets are not taught much more than a few details on chickens. I still would choose other methods than gasoline for leg mites.

Make a mixture of permethrin and either good old mineral oil, or kerosene and souse each foot down into this mixture for a few seconds. This is also when you will first begin regretting your decision to buy feather footed chickens.
Actually, I was adamantly against getting feather footed birds, but got my first one (the Large Black Cochin in my avatar) as a free rare chick and I fell in love with the breed. We'll see if this makes me change my mind.

Sorry guys, I thought I would have pictures by now, but everyone in the house has the flu. I'm fine now, but making dinner wore me out. I don't even want to think about trying to catch my flighty birds.

Hang in there!

A couple weeks ago I dipped the feet of all my birds (only 9) in canola oil (what I had on hand), including my feather footed Brahma, because a couple of them has slightly raised scales. (I, too, had planned not to get chickens with feathered feet, but my hubby picked up the chicks and really wanted one he could name Buttercup, and the feed store lady chose her for him. She’s pretty adorable and I’m glad we have her!) Anyway, Buttercup’s feet feathers looked messy for quite awhile, but are almost back to normal now. This thread reminds me that I need to repeat with a deeper jar this weekend. Thanks!

What do you guys think of these pictures? I think I may be in the clear and the scales were lifted because of their feet being wet constantly. The "scaly" patches around their ankles is dried mud, not flaking scales.

Cornish hen. This is the one that initially had me worried. Even she looks MUCH better now.
