I have a silkie rooster who has an upper respiratory infection. In the past I have had amoxicillin in pill form so it was easy to give to a sick bird. I have capsules with powered amoxicillin in them. Does anyone know the amount I should give a silkie rooster? Would I dilute with water and give it to him using a syringe ? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Right now the corrid isn’t helping to clear it up. I should add. The capsules are 500mg.

Sorry to hear about your rooster.

Does the Amoxicillin usually clear up respiratory symptoms for you? Do you know which disease he might have?
Normally something like Mycoplasma does not respond to Amoxicillin and something like IB (Infectious Bronchitis) is a virus so antibiotics won't treat that.

Corid is a coccidiostat and does not have antibiotic properties, it only treats Coccidia which is a protozoa.

Anyway. What's in your capsules won't dissolve in water.
Weigh your rooster so you can give him the correct dosage. Dosage for Amoxicillin is 57mg per pound of weight given 2 times a day.

Mix your powder into something "known" like 1 teaspoon of yogurt, canned cat food, liverwurst, etc. This now can be easily divided to get your dosage.

For example if you have 250mg powder and mix it with 1tsp cat food...1/4 teaspoon would contain approx 62.5mg dose. Make sense?

Amoxicillin is usually not affective for most respiratory infections in chickens. What symptoms are you seeing? Some diseases are caused by viruses or fungus, and will not respond to antibiotics. MG or coryza, bacterial diseases may be treated with antibiotics, but will not cure them.

Very helpful post! Thank you for future reference!!

Hi. What ever it is ,seems amoxicillin has cleared it up in past birds. He has a runny eye that has bubbles at times. He sounds stuffed up and keeps his beak open to breath. Shakes his head as to clear his nads ? nostrils. He also has swelling on the other side of his head, above his beak in front of his eye., while it’s not causing his eye to run , it has effected his vision. I added sulfadimethoxine to their water as well. Maybe I am not battling an upper respiratory infection? Thank you for the responses. I so appreciate it!

Bubbles in the eyes along with swelling could be Mycoplasma - if he responds to Amox along with a Sulfa drug, it could be Infectious Coryza, but it's so hard to know unless testing is done.
Do you have photos of him?
Any lesions or canker inside the beak?

I will get a picture for you when I am off work for the day. I have seen no lesions or canker inside the beak. The pictures I have seen of birds with Coryza look the same as he has.

There is powder inside the capsules. That should mix with water.

. What I did was chopped up a tomato and coated the pieces with the Amoxicillin from the capsule. He went for that. I also gave him fresh water with the sulfa added. How long would you suggest I continue with the Amoxicillin? This treatment worked before with a rooster I had for 9 years before old age took him. With him I had pills and it was much easier to give him those. Now I guess I wait and see if this works. He is active and alert ,eating and drinking like a champ. So appreciate all the advice. Thank you so much. ❤️

. You are correct. It doesn’t dissolve in water. Would be easier to give it to him if it did.
