Treating Wry Neck In Crested Duckling *EDITED TITLE*

Put the heat lamp right where you divide the play pen, they'll seek out the heat source and will end up laying next to each other under it, I'd give Qwackers less room to run around than the other 2 that way she won't have to try so hard to find the heat and her food and water. Also if you see it isn't working with just the one, heat lamps are pretty cheap actually.

At this stage all you can do is try, if you didn't give her any of the vits and try to stablize her you may have already lost her. Just use the guide lines others have used and worked for them.
Thanks for the encouragement. I am wrapping things up and work and will be heading home soon.

Another thing that worries me...from what I have read cresteds and I think silkies are more suseptible to this condition and odds are it'll reoccur. In my opinion it is unethical to continue breeding for these traits. My sister ordered them because they were cute, too bad more people don't know the facts with these genetic disorders:-(

I was thinking last night that they should warn people of the predisposition of these animals for neurological complications, so the person can make an informed decision.

That is a fact, when Kevin posted about the truth about crested I had no idea, if more people were aware, hopefully those that come to BYC will see the truth and it will make a difference. But look at Bently evidently he isn't having any relapses so hopefully they can over come this. Too bad hatcheries aren't more ethical.

Miss Lydia, I had no idea either. subhanalah there should be a disclaimer that the hatcheries give. People are choosing them because of the cute poof on their heads. I'd rather have a plain healthy duck/chicken over one with a purposely bread abnormality!

I am hoping that mine has a success story to tell like Bentley.

OK, I have them separate now. They can see each other, but Qwackers is on one side, Indie and Raj are on the other. I am working now at getting the temperature up to about 80-85. I had a 250 watt heat bulb, so I switched.

With all of the reading and trying to figure dosing I'm going crazy. Here's what I have...
Prednisolone 15ml per 5ml
This med is used in the same manner and dosage as Predisone. I even found that it is used to treat wry neck in humans.
Selenium 200mcg
Polyvisol (w/o iron)

The Brown Egg Blue Egg dosages are for a 2lb bird. Qwackers is no where near that. I tried breaking the dosages down for her size, but math is NOT my strong point.

So, this is what I am going to do for the first week. I am going to find a small empty bottle, crush the selenium and dissolve into 14ml (1 syringe) of hot water.

1 drop of Prednisolone and 3 drops of Polyvisol twice a day
2 drops of selenium once a day

This is just winging it, but about the best figuring that I can do.

Sounds like a plan to me sure hoping you see improvement quickly, how is she doing in her own side of the brooder? did you give her a stuffed to cuddle with?

Miss Lydia, Indie and Raj seem more bothered by the separation than Qwackers. They're all quiet for now. I just finished feeding and hydrating Qwackers. She sat in my lap and I held the water and food dish where she could get to it without much effort. She ate and drank then napped in my lap while I gave her a neck rub. I was covered in mash by the time we were done.

Aww bless, was Qwackers able to eat on her own? Glad you were able to get a neck rub in, and wearing mash is par for the course when feeding ducklings thank goodness it washes off easily. Did you start the pred?

Yes, she was eating and drinking on her own. I was just holding the dish because she has no aim. I did start the pred and selenium. I'm keeping a journal now to track times and doses.

I'm glad to hear she was able to eat and drink on her own, what are you going to do when at work? will she be able to find her food and water on her own? That' s good to keep a journal hopefully you'll notice a big difference in a short time. You know I am pulling for you both.
