treats and ants

I am wondering how other people deal with this. Anytime I bring the girls a treat - it is usually fruit, since it is so hot out and I like cold fruit on days like this. Well, after minutes - the treats (or what is left of them - or even where the treats were sitting) is covered with millions of ants!! It makes me not want to give treats because it is more for me to clean up. Gross.

I have the same problem, so I sprinkle some DE around. It helps, but does not totally solve the problem.

Rather than sprinkling the DE around, pour a big solid pile of it and place the treat in the middle--make the ants HAVE to walk through the DE to get to the fruit.

ants=extra protein, the chickens eat em anyways... unless the chickens mind horribly i wouldn't worry about it.
