Hello all,

I am a newbie and we just got our chicks yesterday. I was told they are 1 to 1 1/2 weeks old. When can I start giving them treats and what is best to give them? Thanks!!

I don't give chick this age treats most of the time. I will sometimes give them dry oatmeal. They like that quite a bit. It is important that they eat a properly balanced diet at this age.

My chicks really like cooked egg yolk! I also sliced up dandelion leaves and I give them dried mealworms from the feed store. They also say to offer grit with any food you give chicks other than the chick starter. I got a large bag of crushed up oyster shells at my feed store for like 4 dollars. I'm going to see if they'll enjoy apple next. :) but my chicks are a 3 weeks old.

Oyster shell is not grit. It is for hens so that they get enough calcium when they are laying. It can harm chicks this age to get that much calcium.

Oh no. I guess my friends at the feed store gave me the wrong stuff. That sucks they're usually very knowledgable. At least I have a bunch for later! Thanks for the tip!
