Is there anything I can give my 2 week old chicks for a treat that is safe? They are on starter feed only and want to scratch the floor looking for bits and bites.

Hey! congrats!
I have 29 that are 3wks!
Mine do the same it's their instinct.
I like to give mine worms from my compost pile.
They run around playing keep away,It's lots of fun!
here are some great treat ideas
#1Worms
#2 grubs
#3 crickets
#4 clover/grass also watercress
And lots more experiment and have fun!

Just remember to give grit if you start giving treats.

I tried to give my chicks a small earthworm this weekend and you would have thought I was trying to poison them! They wouldn't have anything to do with it!

Thanks so much for the ideas!

I gave my babies (8 weeks, 6 weeks, and 4 weeks) mealworms for the first time this weekend!! WOW, talk about some happy chicks.. they just LOVED them!
My chicks also like strawberries and cream oatmeal, though they seem more fond of the strawberry bits than the oatmeal. Also watermelon and cantalope.
Scrambled eggs work well too.. ohh, and don't forget to give them grit so they can digest the treats!

i buy mine mealworms. but the earthworm u gave them was prob too big.
mine are scared inless i cute the meal worms in smaller pieces. then theyll eat it.

try that. it might help.

i also feed mine wheat bread after two weeks old.

What do you use for grit for babies. I don't buy any grit for my adults, I was told they get enough with eating things outside. They are free range. So what does grit consist of?

I used the grit that you can find in the pet bird dept. at the store when mine were smaller. It's very fine. Since they started going outside last week I don't give it anymore. They find their own.

When can I mix them with my adults? I know they are too young now, but I'm wondering what age would be good.

I'm not the one to answer that for you, since mine are all the same age and I don't plan on adding any more. Ask the question in a seperate thread in this category or do a search on it. I'm sure you'll get lots of answers.
