Treats

Fruit is okay in moderation. Mealworms are also okay in moderation, though some people recommend smashing or cutting the heads off because there's a remote chance your quail will swallow them alive and the worms can live for a period of time in the quail's crop and hurt or kill them. Better safe than sorry, in my opinion!

I got the freezer dried meal worms, they love them!! It is like a mad dash to snatch them up once they realize what they are. They also love earth worms. They pick at the egg shell but don't seem too interested. They don't care for greens either. Any one else have any secret treats? They also like millet and gobble up any ants that wonder into the coop.

I grow mixed grains (chicken feed) in a few small flat pots and place one at the time in the quail coop. They love pecking on the young shoots. In an hour there is nothing left. I rotate the pots. I do the same with lettuce seeds when I have a lot - I save seeds from my garden. I also started breeding meal worms which will be fed to the birds when there is enough of them. I will probably freeze them, then dry and powder and add to their feed for extra protein.

They love grasshopers too, and I seem to have a lot of them in the garden. I catch them and poke them through the mesh, very entertaining to watch! Unfortunately weekends are the only time I can do this.

The forsythias are in full bloom and the chickens love them! They jump as high as they can to reach the upper branches. They also love fresh ground beef, of course worms and plain yogurt, tomatoes from the garden.

Thanks everyone! I gave them some kale today, they just walked all over it. I thought fruit is bad for them? What about mealworms?
I clip any greens I give them to the walls of their wire cage with spring clamps or clothes pins.
It takes a while for them to strip the leaves off the stems and they stay cleaner . It took a few times of giving it to them beore they ate it.

Mine haven't refused any thing I have given them. Seeds Boiled potato, greens, grass seeds ,boiled egg..
But they drop the bugs before they can eat them so they fall through the bottom of their wire cage.
