Whatever they are.....rusty rusty slates or buffs...they are beautiful! How cool to have such a colorful flock! And I LOVE coffee. I grind beans too. All the coffee talk made me go brew a cup! But i can't let it sit...need FRESH BREWED!! That first cup in the morning is the best.

So Daisy is still anxious before she lays an egg. Paces & makes alien sounds. Won't settle down. Has actually hopped the fence a few times. The Bourbon Red just lays & keeps on walking! I put a dog crate in her pen...thinking she was looking for a private place to lay. They just pooped all over it. Could she be looking for a man??? I'm just trying to figure her out. When she's not getting ready to lay she just hangs out & comes up to get her head scratched. Any ideas folks??

It is amazing how quiet the yard is today with one turkey Jake in Guinea Gulag. He may never get out again. A bonus is the one in prison is the one that is a PITA at bedtime and flies onto the roof.
Ralphie you did the right thing with that bully of a jake. Only thing I would worry about is what he is learning from those guineas! I've always heard inmates learn a few new tricks while in the clink. Hmmm.....

memphis I just boiled them for 12 minutes same as chicken and my DH likes them.
Thanks Chickadoodles! They turned out great. Mixed in their yolks with the chicken egg yolks & made some great deviled eggs for the party tomorrow.

And my girls are getting pretty good about going in & out of the coop. As long as I shake their cup of BOSS they will follow me anywhere.

I hang box fans on my turkey pen. And the chicken pen. Doesn't seem to freak them out. Of course my chicken free range all day, and the turkeys are loose when I'm home. But staging box fans other than in there runs is impractical for me. But it helps at night when it doesn't get below 85. One thing they love are wading puddles. I dug a few shallow spots in the yard, only about 3 " deep, & fill them with water before going to work. They all love to stand in the water. It cools them off. My blue slate turkey actually just lays down in them.

Wow....didn't realize how tenacious turkeys can be! Last week my Bourbon Red became fascinated with the chickens coop. In and out she would go. Then she'd walk around the outside. Or fly to the roof & walk around. Sometimes she'd find a hen in the nest box and stand there until the hen would run her out. Finally today she decided go try the nest box. It's not an easy fit. Took her awhile to figure out how to even get into it! Somehow she managed. Big problem....she picked the box with my broody Australorp. Who is sitting on air...don't have a rooster. There was growling, chirping, and lots of thumping around. I know...i should have yanked her out. But I was laughing to hard. Then...silence. I peeked in...afraid she smothered grumpy hen. But grumps was wedged under her tail. Half an hour later...out she pops. Yep...she laid her big ole turkey egg. Of course the hen immediately shoved it under herself. She's just one determined turkey!

It was really interesting...one determined turkey & one terribly mad hen. Wish I had a picture of Grumps poking out from under the turkey tail. The turkey made a sound I've never her make before. She was peeping like a chick at one point. Not sure what that was about.

So...those of you with several different types of heritage turkeys...do the different varieties have different personality traits? I only have the two hens, Blue Slate & Bourbon Red, and they are quite different.

Feisty...I think Turkules was upset because you weren't letting him use the power tools. You know how guys are! It's amazing that little guy made it up on the roof. And so glad he made it down. I had a young Barnevelder fly up on my garage to play king of the world. Took forever to con her into coming down!

Chaos....I leave feed in their coop all the time. And oyster shell. They munch throughout the day. They also free range when I can keep an eye on them.

Ralph...I obviously didn't want Grumps hurt. Probably shouldn't have let the turkey climb in on top of her! But she's a hen with a lot of "attitude " and I enjoyed the battle of wills! Here she is.. her picture says it all!
