giffy, I don't disagree with a word you wrote but there is a school of thought that thinks that the presence of eggs in the nest stimulates the production of hormones that cause broodyness. I know of no studies that support this school but most poultrymen will remove eggs from eggs daily to prevent a build up of eggs which tends to end egg production early because of the female going broody.
 
I've had three ducks go broody after the egg count in their nests was up to 12 or 14. Two were runners and one was a Magpie. (My chickens on the other hand just decide to go broody with or without eggs.)
