We used to put burnt out light bulbs in the nest so that the hens would lay there. Sometimes snakes would eat the light bulbs. I would suggest that, but I already got called down for thinking unkind thoughts about stray cats in the other thread.

I'm surprised a snake would eat a light bulb, especially considering how they can weed out rotten and otherwise bad eggs. You'd think they'd notice a light bulb was a bad egg. Sounds cruel.
Can you build a roosting/nesting area for the chickens that is snake proof, with a door you can shut at night so the snakes can't get in? Our run is built of wire large enough for snakes to slither through, but we used wood and hardware cloth to keep out potential egg eaters. It is open during the day to allow the chickens out, but the only time I've ever had trouble with snakes in a chicken coop was at night.
If that's not possible, I would think there's nothing to it but to kill the snakes, as they've obviously found their hunting ground and it would be a hard job to convince them otherwise. You could feed the snake meat back to the chickens . . . an odd sort of circle of life thing, but I can never kill a wild animal without using it somehow.

Besides trying to keep the coop snake free with frequent checking for openings, I plan to use egg gourds and in fact, have plenty of egg gourd seeds to plant.
I don't know how effective they are, but my SO's family used them throughout their chicken keeping days and he swears by em, so I figure it's worth a shot.

i have used the golf ball thing for years,, to make hens lay in a particular spot. if u rub them in chicken poo then the snake will eat it.. but it could "throw" it back up... so sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. i have already gotten bitten by one.. they arent poisonous, but thats besides the point! its hurts.

i have nothing against snakes. they are beautiful creatures and they have to eat too.
JUST NOT MY CHICKS AND MY EGGS

my chickens are free range, and lay in numerous places, not just in the coop. so i cant make the coop completly snake free. as they can squeeze as small as a dime if needed to.

i actually will use to light bulb idea. i know i know,, kinda cruel. but if it works it works, and they will stop multiplying (counted 9 at one time during the day all eating eggs its freaky)

thanks again

No snakes are poisonous, they are Venomous.

I personally wouldnt suggest the lightbulb thing, or the golfball thing since the snake will not be able to eat and it will slowly starve to death. I love snakes, and own 6, so I dont like snake killing talk, lol.

How are the snakes getting into the coop? Woops, I just reread your post. Well, that's a tough one. If they arent laying just in the coop, I really dont think there is ANYTHING you can do, as you will never get rid of the snakes completely.

It just amazes me. I WANT to find snakes in my coop, and I never can!

Quote:That's the point of the egg gourd. I found some growing in the woods next to the garden area and asked my SO what it was. That's how I found out about using them against the snakes. The two I saw on the vine looked just like cream colored eggs to me. I planned to go back and harvest them, but the cows beat me to em.

I'm going to plant at least six of the plants in my (cow proof) garden.
