trout or grey color difference

Benjamin Fish looks more like the colouring of a silver apppleyard drake with those white stripes on the face. It could just be a particular time he is going into molt though- as they dont appear in the first shot.

Hey Guys,

I hope you're all well. I try to check out the board every now and then for color questions, but have been sick for several months and getting ready to have yet another surgery. It's nice to see people posting about the Grays and Trouts.

I bought out several of the last of the Holderread's Grays and some other rare colors when they sold out of them. Gray and Trout are very similar. Gray is simply wild type like the wild Mallard. Trout is wild plus light phase. This differs only slightly from the Appleyard color, the only difference between that Appleyard also carries the restricted genes. The thing about many, many lines of Trouts though is that the males do often also have prominent facial stripes. I believe this is controlled by a separate gene perhaps closely related to restricted Mallard since they do not have the other signs of being restricted. I hope that helps understand the colors better.

The difference in the color should be obvious with those great pictures posted. Basically, Trouts are just lighter than Gray. The Gray areas of feathering are predominately replaced with white. The hens are lighter with more distinct white eye stripes. The drakes can have slightly larger clarets than in Gray (not always), but with white lacing. The ducklings are harder to tell from Gray. They can look almost identical to Grays. The main difference is that Trout ducklings usually have more yellow down, which often connects the dorsal spots.

There is quite a difference between the two colours, I have developed a line of trout Aussie calls, here is a comparison of a trout duck with a natural (wild type) duck. Top pic trout.

I really love the trout females! They are so striking! Next season I want to do pied trouts :D

And here are some trout ducklings.

I noticed the duckling in your avatar, is it a single factor pied? Do you know what colour it's parents were?
