Trust Issues? -- Need Advice

After four years of living there. I wouldn't give a thought to the
trust issues. Lock like that wouldn't keep anyone out anyway.

Or perhaps a thin piece of scotch tape would tell you if someone
does open the door while you're not there.

If you can see that lock then you can pick it easy enough... hanger, flip, done. So not even remotely secure at all against an adult who might try to come in.

Which is why MY first thought was "Do they have kids"... of their own or visiting (any relatives come for the holiday?) or babysitting ones... that might see that door and decide to explore... short people to who that little hook is the devil because THEY are too short to reach it and thus it keeps them out??

I've used those myself, to keep my kiddos in/out, work brilliantly... until they get big enough to pull over a chair anyways... and they're uber cheap and easy to install.

Or for dogs come to think of it... Janie will nibble JUST right on the bottom corner of the door and can pull it open. Can't do that if it's shut totally, but with a closed but not totally closed (laziness or warping) she can get anywhere... so that's a thought too.

If any of those are possible I'd prolly convince myself that was it... based on my own experience, and the total lack of security with such a flimsy thing... not like it's really going to keep anyone out... I reckon it's at least sorta logical.

Was the door always warped? If not, maybe they warped it themselves trying to open it or something, and had to put a hook and eye lock to keep it closed after they warped it. If you can see the hook and eye, then it sounds like you could easily open it. If they were worried about YOU, they probably would have put a paddle lock on it. It sounds like they're just trying to keep it closed, not so much as locked from you. Old farmhouse doors have a way of opening on their own due to age.

I agree with the others, I would not worry about it. If you wanted to go into their place, you could if you wanted to. It protects everyone and it would give them a piece of trust as well that if nothing been disturbed, then they have their fears unfounded.

As long they are not doing anything illegially, I would nto worry about it.

Thanks everyone for your advice and input. It is just the hook and eye that is latched. The husband wanted to show me some work being done to the house a few months ago and told me that he would have to unlatch the door for me to let me in. I told him it was not latched. (it had never been latched so far as I know since he took the room back). He seemed surprised for some reason and claimed that it was probably because he had painted the door. I mentioned the door being warped too and he seemed to not know what I was talking about. I have come through that door many times but always by invitation. That was the only discussion we had over the door. Right now, it just appears to be a room where fixtures are assembled for their new bathroom. Not a living space yet. The guy has extremely sharp eyes and very aware of things so I am certain he would know if anything had ever been out of place.. A hook and eye would not stop all-out burglarizing but it WOULD stop someone from being light fingered....A roll of paper towels here or a case of plastic forks, there. That type of thing.

Maybe they have a nosy relative that visits them?
