My chicks are fine, as long as you hold the chick correctly vent sexing shouldn't hurt the chick.
I needed to make sure of the genders before sending them off this Thursday.

It was by 2 different roos. The alpha roo died a year ago. Then the next roo took over the task. They are all broody at this time, hatching Polish eggs, but when they start laying again, I'll put some up for auction as test eggs, pay shipping only.

The sex is determined by the hen, not the rooster. Unlike many other species.

The eggs I hatch are from breeders, not from my own flock. Although a friend of mine IS hatching eggs from my flock..... and there are several roosters in my flock. But again, it's the HEN that carries the sex determining gene.

Gryeyes is 100% correct . . . in chickens, the females determine the sex of the offspring.

They are just myths.
Think about it ....... don't you think if it were true......... the hatcheries would have figured it out! Then they would not be adding all those male "packing peanuts," to everyone's orders, just to get rid of them!

Try looking at their primary feathers and secondary feathers.

Females - Primary feathers are longer than secondary feathers
Males - Both Primary and Secondary feathers will be the same length.

There is also a flaw to this test, In some breeds this won't work .......you just have to take a chance and see if it works for you.
This is why some breeds from Hatcheries are only listed as Straight Runs.
