I am new to having birds like chickens or ducks, but I am super excited to be working on a new batch of eggs that could actually hatch this time. I had another set shipped to me but incubator problems took them out.

My friend has ducks which are laying and she has given me 6 eggs. 2 were in the incubator when the the first batch got cooked, so I am only hoping that they may hatch. But it is likely they won't after being exposed to a lot of heat, but with it being a shorter period of time maybe.

That leaves what I am calling Batch 2. 4 eggs; 2 Cayuga, and 2 Rounin eggs to hatch. I thought I would share my journey and the story of my little eggs. And of course the excitement of becoming a new duck momma.

For identifying the eggs they have names.
There is R1B2- Layed 6/13- which is a Rounin
R2B2- Layed 6-15- Another Rounin
C1B2 - Layed 6/13- Cayuga
C2B2 - Layed 6/16- Another Cayuga

I am currently torn between all the options that i keep reading about. One says to spray the eggs lightly with room temp water. Other say turn by hand because auto turners don't do a good job.

I am also wondering if it could be safe enough to candle once a day if i am using that as my cooling period too? I would love to have a little picture journal of each egg developing but will only do it if it will not be to hard on the eggs.

Hopefully in 28 days I will have little fluff butts. :D Included are my first day one candlings Their names are on them.

Daily candling is fine.
I have done that every day so far, and my duck eggs are perfectly okay :)

Thanks for letting me know. I just don't want to put them more at risk to not hatch than I have to. But the draw of having pictures as they grow is super compelling! I am hoping this will lead to a real hatch this time around.

Here is day two candling. Still to early to really tell if there is anything going on in the eggs.

I am starting to think that the ones left over from the first batch may not be growing, I am on day 5 and they don't look like they are changing. Glad I have batch two going.

Here are my day 4 candlings. I think something seems to be cooking in there. I am not completely sure on it but I think they are growing.

Here is the rest of my try set two. I won't post all the pictures big. But will thumbnail them. I just got them shipped to me. So far they look good. I did loose one to a flashlight falling and hitting an egg last night. :(

And, that is the biggest concern about daily candling, IMO! I am a candling junkie. I get my fix when incubating eggs by only doing one egg/day! Then, I candle all eggs around day 7,10, and prior to lock down. When I do the last candling, I do so without shifting the egg from it's position. Of course, clean hands are a must.

I will only be candling a few from each clutch now that I have more than four. That way I get to see where things are daily. I will candle everyone on the 7's though. That way if someone dies I can remove it before I have another crack situation.

I am finding it is hard not to sit and candle all the time. It is like an addiction. :D
