So, I left her in the broody breaker last night, and checked on her often. I was concerned because it was quite cold. Tonight it is well below freezing and I felt compelled to put her back in the coop. The garage is too warm, so I don’t think it would help to put her in there. Will the dog crate still work if I only put her in there during the day?I agree with advice above.. no bedding, cage off the ground.. And shes in the cage day and NIGHT. 3 days, 3 nights. Let her out at the end of her jail time and if she's still broody, back in the cage. Good luck!
Not sure of your setup but it might work ok if you put her on the roost at night time and cage during the day, make sure nest boxes are blocked off so she can't access them or any cosy spots she may try to nest in. Otherwise garage at night with her in the cage sounds like it would work?-or is your garage heated? So, I left her in the broody breaker last night, and checked on her often. Yes, the garage is quite warm and might be too cozy. I’m going to try putting her in the cage during the day and in the coop at night for now and see how it goes. I check on her often and practically shove the food and water in her face. Haha. So at least she is eating, drinking and pooping normally. .. One of my hens actually is broody sitting on the roost sidewaysso cage is necessary for her. I have a cage cover (with ventilation) I put over the cage in colder months so they can still be warm enough, but break the broodiness.
It should still work, but may take longer that way, since they'll usually sneak into the nest boxes as soon as there's enough morning light for them to do so. But better to be safe than sorry if you're concerned that she can't stay warm enough where she's at.Will the dog crate still work if I only put her in there during the day?
I find 1x2 mesh works better, the poops fall thru. What I do is get a roll of hardware cloth, measure the bottom of the crate on the inside, and cut a piece to fit.
1x2 would certainly work better. I clean mine every day. I also have tiny chickens though, so their tootsies would go through the 2" openings.I find 1x2 mesh works better, the poops fall thru.
You can just turn the crate upside down, put the tray on top to deter escape(it's happened).
Then you can shove a couple 4x4's under crate to raise it up.
