I'm a first time chicken haver. I picked up these chicks Sunday. The black one was so little and barely came out from under the heat plate the first 18 hours or so and I was (still am still sometimes) worried about him (or her) because he is so much smaller than the other.

However, he is the first one to run to me when I open the brooder, was the first brave enough to try a mealworm treat, will chase the other chicks around to take their meal worm treats, and is now the first one to try to fly, although failing.

A welcome but unexpected turn of events for me

I have the same "problem"! Although my chicks are only two days old, the biggest one is making a concerted effort to fly away from me when I need to relocate them for brooder cleaning. It can only manage an inch or so of lateral flight, maybe ¼" off the ground, but I'm scrambling to set up a bigger brooder with higher sides to keep them safe inside! I am also a first-time chicken parent, and I had no idea they could manage any sort of flight with those stubby little wings.
