Hi, I've been lurking here for a while doing a lot of reading. Moved to NW FL a couple years ago and bought a place with a minimalist coop. I think they had their kids do everything because it is all about 4 ft high. I am getting ready to raise the roof and expand the run a little before I take the chicken plunge. Thinking about Austrolorops and Buff Orpingtons. Came here from TX with 2 horses, added 2 goats a few moths ago and we also have 3 dogs. The avatar pic is somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 years old from my childhood. I'll uppdate it when I have my own.

Glad you joined us!

The two breeds you selected should be docile, excellent layers for you. Good luck with your coop renovations!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Oh, those are excellent breeds you are considering! Both of these breeds are very docile, friendly, great on the laying and very weather hardy. My Australorps are big on the lap sitting! Can't sit anywhere without a bird on my lap.

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry...https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

You'll really enjoy the two breeds you picked out! Many BYC members have kept them and say that they are docile birds that lay large numbers of eggs.

Welcome to the flock!
Our BO are the friendliest birds in our flock - and I have heard so much about Austrolorps being the same (they were derived from Orpingtons, so that makes sense) that they are on the top of our "must have" list for nest year's addtitions.
