Trying to lay...should I be worried?

It appears that one of our 4-month-old BLRW hens is trying to lay her first egg, but it's been over 24 hours since she started camping out in the same spot in the coop. She did move away from her spot briefly when I was down there yesterday and there was no egg. Should we be concerned? Is it normal for the first egg to take a long time and effort for the hen?

4 months seems awefully soon for an egg. She may be playing house and just getting use to the nesting deal. Mine didn't lay till almost 7 months.

I have had a couple of birds start laying at 4 months but most were 5 and 6 months old. They do investigate prior. How does the comb and wattles look and does she squat for you? When the combs and wattles get nice and red and she starts squatting eggs are coming soon.

I agree she may be emulating your other birds and exploring the nest box.

Not much you should do. Just let her be as you really don't have control.

I wouldn't lock her out of the coop because then she may find a "secret spot" and you won't know where
she is, assuming you have bushes etc.

She'll do what she needs to do. Trust nature here.

Thanks for your responses. I am a bit concerned about her health, because she is acting strange - not roosting with the rest of the group, not moving very well. It looks like some of the other ones have been pecking her comb. She is such a little beauty, I hope she isn't sick

Is there anything we can do to help her?

I can't speak to the other symptoms, but is it cold where you are? If so, it could be frostbite on her comb. Just a thought to keep in mind....
