I have 4 barred rock laying hens about 1.5 years old, and a barred rock rooster about 6 months old. Currently they are in different coops (rooster is by himself). My question is how can I get the rooster to mate a hen and make some chicks?

Move the rooster into the pen with the hens.
Wait about two days.
Any eggs the hens lay after that should be fertile, and that should continue as long as the rooster lives in the same pen with the hens.

To get the fertile eggs to hatch, you will need an incubator.
Or a broody hen can hatch eggs, but your Barred Rocks are not likely to go broody.

"Broody" is when a hen wants to sit on eggs all day and all night. She will have to do this for three weeks in order to hatch eggs. If she doesn't want to, then she just will not do it.
