Trying to raise chicken's in northern Minnesota

Hi,I'm not very computer savvy to say the least but I will try. I take care of a flock of 17 nine month old birds they are very diverse in breeds and crossed with several breed's .I think that they are very good birds. Every day lately I've been collecting 9 to 12 egg's from only 15 hen's, local's say that it's amazing being winter and a unheated coop.I can use all the tips that I can get from everyone especially if You can tell me what breeds You think that they are. Thank You.

You don’t need a heated coop (heat is not recommended), but winter eggs are great. Because the girls are young, they aren’t going through a winter molt. That comes next year. Therefore, they have the energy to lay eggs.

*Heat is dangerous because fires happen. Also, if you lose power, the girls won’t be acclimated to the cold. Even in MN, chickens can handle the cold.

Thank You all for Your warm welcome, as soon as I can figure out how to get photos of the bird's on here I will. People say that I care for them like no other, baby them.I feed them cracked corn every night before they roost for the night it helps considerably. And warm water in the morning with some scratch grains, it seems to really make them lay better and quicker, they are definitely very happy bird's. Plus I use a solar powered light in the evening for a couple of hours to make up for the lack of daylight being winter.

Welcome to the forums, yeah! It's pretty amazing that the chickens got used of Minnesota's cold weather. I'm really amazed. keep up the good work though, and take care of your chickens.

Thank You, right now I've got 2 incubators going in my room with over a 100 egg's 9 exotic silkies from Texas and 7 silkie eggs from Wisconsin the rest are made up from the flock here.only °2 outside now feel sorry for them, their from Minnesota flocks locally from people who know how to raise northern birds.
