I picked up an order of TSC chicks and in the chaos of the moment I didn't think to double check what they'd given me was correct. I've had chickens for several years but haven't had a new batch of chicks in a couple.

All that to say, I should have gotten (all pullets) :

2 New Hampshire red
2 Barred rock
2 White leghorns
2 Speckled Sussex
2 Cuckoo Marans
8 "Starlight Green Eggers" -- I was assured they'll have a wide variety of plumage but they all look brown. Anyone had these before?

What I THINK I got instead of my New Hampshire red is this weird all black breed...I thought maybe silkies because they have 5 toes and are SOLID black -- but although they were the youngest when I picked them up (some were a few days older than others) they are among the biggest now. They also have single (regular?) combs. The size also leads me to believe they aren't bantams. Here is a few close ups. I called Hoover's and they said this is NOT one of their birds and they thought it was an "Aquila", whatever that is...TSC says they have no clue what breed either. They're going to call me back if they find out the name of the other hatchery they ordered from.

I think I got 2 barred rocks, 1 cuckoo maran, and an australorp? Here they are in a row, and the close up is what I think is an australorp. (Which doesn't make sense because they didn't have australorps in the store....). The brown ones in the center are the SGEs.

This is also leading me to question the sexing. I swear if I got oopsie roosters again... :th

These look like 3 barred rocks to me. The one that looks like an australorp has a little more white than I remember mine having, but could be?

The 5 toed black chickens remind me a lot of my satins as chicks, but they are on the small side.

Okay! I have had australorps before and I thiiiink that's what they looked like but who knows!! I agree it's a lot of white.

One of the barred birds has a big ol' white dot on the top of their head too.

The satins look too white...I don't know!!

I saw that! One of my girls had a fair-sized dot. :fl

The satins are dark gray/black. That was probably a camera filter making them look lighter. Maybe someone else will know what has 5 toes and black comb/feet etc.

I called TSC and they said they ordered from Hoover's and one other place in Michigan. I showed them a picture and they had no clue. I called Hoover's and set them a pic. They said that's not one of their birds and had no clue but thought it could be an "Aquila". I googled it and there's no such thing. I called Townline in Michigan and they didn't know but I emailed them a picture.

:barnie
The other thing is the satins don't look like they have single combs, do they?

Update: TSC called back and said they did use Townline for ducks only. The other hatchery was called "5th day nursery" and I can't find any such thing...I did find a "Fifth Day Farm" in PA. :th

Most of them do... a few have more of a silkie comb.

Did you order these chicks or pick them out in the store? It always amazes me how little most of their employees are about the chickens they sell. Have heard them selling meatbirds as future laying hens and all kinds of craziness. There are a few employees who do know more of what they're talking about.

Whatever you got, they're cuties and hopefully all pullets!

Well I called 5th Day Farms and it turns out they do have a name!! They're called "Southern Ramblers" and are a silkie hybrid with a standard chicken. The guy I spoke with said they purchased the chicken parents from a genetics company and the genetics company would not disclose the breed(s) of chickens...they lay tan eggs but he said they are pretty bad at egg laying and not good for meat production. So. Mystery solved!
