We originally ordered chicks from Meyer, but canceled when we thought we wouldn't be ready for them in time. Well, I figured I would be able to get some between Country Max and TSC..... I didn't realize there's a NY state imposed 6 bird minimum for every purchase! Back to the drawing board.... I'll probably order again even though it kills me to pay shipping. I don't think there are any 4-H meetups or livestock auctions near me.... and no postings on CL...

I ALMOST had chickens yesterday!

Our Tractor Supply has the same rules.......not sure why they have those rules when in most areas there is usually a limit of 2-4 chickens per backyard. Perhaps you could ask the supply store if they know of anyone who would be willing to split a purchase. I have an order placed for delivery in May from Meyer for 8. I can only accomodate 4-5....BUT i do know of someone who will take the other three (if I can part with them) for their farm. Good Luck!

A 6 chick minimum is not bad. In our area it's 12. This is to discourage impulse purchases. After chicks are 4 weeks old a person can purchase 1. Cute little fluffy butts are impulse buying magnets. I believe this is the mentality behind those laws. Protects those that can't think for themselves and the overall health of livestock (neglect).

Here in Ohio we have the same six chick rule, however you can buy single chicks off of CL from local breeders and back yard keepers. I would try there :)

I'll add that the 12 chick law is an actual law in our area and not individual store policies. Chicken swaps must also comply, Craigslist and individual sales are not monitored. Though any number of chicken (just one) can be purchased after they are not "cute and cuddly" under 4 weeks old.

We almost did the same thing. We DID order from Meyer but couldn't get Silver Laced Wyandotte. The other day we went into TCS and they had 'em! I was going to get one to augment the 4 I ordered from Meyer and found out about the 6 chick minimum (here in Michigan)...so we didn't get anything.

I wish they'd actually put this in the fine print of some of their ads for chick days...I would have been REALLY bummed if I had waited, counting on getting them at TSC, only to find that the minimum was more birds than I could get.

I've been checking CL diligently for coops and chicks for months! Nada.... If I saw more chick postings I might have bought the six at TSC or Country Max and put the others out on CL myself... When I went to TSC they had red production hens and SLWs (straight run), and ducks... Country Max only gets a handful of breeds in one shipment, but at least they're sexed!

I would gladly take a written test on chicken knowledge to prove I'm not an impulse buyer! What if you have a medium size coop with chickens already and just don't have the extra 24 square feet for 6 chickens?
