TSC Bantam Advice

Why not? Depending on the kind of bantam, and the number of hens vs Roos, they can be great. Especially when they grow up together. And they will protect your little hens, find them food, and keep the peace. I have Japanese bantams, and I have Cochin bantams, and I think that you will be missing out of you don’t want Roos lol.
That’s a fair point! I was terrorized by a rooster as a kid, and I have a baby so honestly that’s my number one reason for only wanting hens, at least to start off with. Do you need fo worry about numbers of Roo’s to hens with chickens? Maybe it would be okay, I’m just so very scared of them terrorizing my child 😂 they are beautiful! Maybe we risk it.

Might be a neighbor or ordinance issue. Or, since they are vegetarian, and issue with eating fertilized eggs (a religious/moral thing).

But, yes - most roosters are great!
We also have an ordinance about volume. So not necessarily roosters, just if they’re chatty roosters. Are the bantams just as noisy as full size??

Yes. You can have too many roos to hens. They end up fighting all the time. I just separated 2 BC roosters that were raised together from chicks. The hormones started raging and they were beating each other bloody every day. That’s was 2 roos with 19 hens. They couldn’t stand to see the other mate a hen. Every case isn’t the same but this has been my experience. And yes they are just as noisy as big roosters.

Oy. That’s good information. Thank you! Ducks are very similar, so I was worried about that!

bantam roosters are just as loud, if not louder ime, than standard size. Their crows are much higher pitched though. wishing you luck with whatever you decide to do!
OH NO!!! Okay. So maybe, back to the craigslist idea??? But I’m worried we will hand them off to someone who mistreats them. Any ideas on how to screen someone from Craigslist? My best idea would be to try to get a photo of their coop or something? Or do I just come to terms with the possibility?

I have OEGB roosters that I purchased from TSC. I have 2 coops. One houses the roosters and the hens are in the other. My roosters aren't competing for the hens, so that might make a difference. Their coops are side by side, so they can still interact. My OEGB roosters crow, A LOT. I think it's the most adorable thing in the world but I bet my neighbors don't feel the same. When my large roosters crow, their crows seem to carry much more distance. I hope that makes sense. My OEGB rooster are nice boys. My daughter, 10 year old, has had issues with one of the roosters but he doesn't bother anyone else. I'm unsure of what that's about. He is really small but I'm sure they could inflict some injuries. Even knowing this, I still recommend OEGB's to any and everyone. One other thing, one of my OEGB hens will crow. It's the cutest thing and it's certainly not loud like a rooster. This isn't a specific OEGB hen thing, so don't hold that against the breed. Pyncheons are really awesome Bantams too. My Pyncheon hen is so quiet. She's adorable too. I'm not sure if that's a breed thing, but she is definitely my most quiet bird out of any that I know of. If you can find out what hatchery your TSC gets its Bantams from, you'll be able to check the hatchery site and find out what bantam breeds they have. My Pyncheon was the only one available in that breed the day I got her, but she was shipped to TSC from Privett Hatchery. I'm not sure if other hatcheries carry Pyncheons or not because this was over 2 years ago. Either way, I have no doubt that you'll love Bantams 💜
All of these Bantams are over 2 years old, give or take a month.

Thank you, Heather! Did you identify the breed of bantam by color when you went to TSC? I know that’s how my duckies were. Would you have trusted your daughter with the chickens when she was very little? I so appreciate your input! Thank you again!
