TSC chicken purchase

Something that worked for me with silver laced victims was picking the darkest chicks. The adult males have vastly more white them the females.
I think it may work for silver laced Wyandotte too.
Try other places. I went to one of my regular ACE Hardwares today and was told that they would sell as few as two chicks to keep each other company.

Try other feed stores, Agway etc. TSC can't be the only game in town, even if it means you have to drive a little distance and see the selection that others have.

Some of the hatcheries are allowing for small orders now, and even MyPetChicken will accept a minimum of three, and they ship fast for the date that you specify.

From all of my reading, it seems that most breeders do not sex their day-olds...that's a craft and art form unto itself, so you will probably get straight run from them. Not to discredit the private breeders, but their plate already is full with all the other responsibilities and issues they have to handle.

Our ACE Hardware stores carry chicks (females only) and I think they get them from Ideal or Privett hatcheries. They discount them once they get a little bigger since they weren't sold as chicks.

Some stores need to keep moving "inventory" so older chicks get discounted. Some stores have space to keep older chicks and end up selling them as started pullets/cockerels. So they end up more expensive but are easier to sex.

Years ago we got 2 chickens about a month after Easter. DS's friend who had 2 kids had been given, by someone,1 chick each for Easter. They lived in an apartment with NO yard and the poor chicks had been living in the bathtub, when it wasn't in use. The poor Mom begged me to take them as she thought it was mean to keep them in a bathtub all the time, we had to re home one RIR as it was a cockerel, but still have Oreo, she is black and white barred, but not really sure what she is, she may just be a poor example of some breed. Very sweet hen.
