We're glad to have you.

Good luck with your future flock!

Hi Gerorgina......I totally agree & don't want to put $300 toward something that won't last. Where are you located? And do you have any pics of your coop?

You may want to post at "Canadians - check in here." to find out how others handle your weather and what their coops are like. Welcome to BYC

I must say everyone I have told is trying to talk me out of this :(
Say chickens are dirty & smelly & who will watch them if we go away .
They are sick killjoys :(

Honestly how hard are 3 chickens going to be?

Those people are quite wrong!

Chickens are only dirty and smelly if their owners don't take care of them or if they are raised in large factory farm settings. Cleaning the coop a couple times a month, not letting manure build up, and providing plenty of bedding helps cut down on any smell.

I'm sure there's somebody around you that will watch them if you go away. And, if you only go away for three days or so, chickens can do fine on their own if their feeder is full and water is full.

If chickens were so hard, there wouldn't be nearly 290,000 members and contributers on BackyardChickens! Many people successfully keep chickens; they are easier than a dog in many ways.

Thank you that makes me feel better :)

& post was suppose to read " such killjoys" not sick :)

I am already in love with the little girls :)
I I have only seen them once.

Chickens are really easy to raise. They need the same things all critters need - food, water, occasional treats, and a clean place to sleep and exercise. We travel often because of my husband's position and are usually gone for 3-4 days at a time. The chickens are easier to take care of than the dog! The dog has to be fed and watered (duh) but she also needs to be let out several times a day. Can't just leave her outside because we live in town and she barks when we're gone. The chickens, on the other hand, let themselves out of the coop and into the run, and put themselves to bed in the evening. I fill their feeder and waterer in the morning before we leave town and aside from checking it and topping it off (if it needs it) and gathering the eggs once a day, nobody needs to hover over them. Good thing, because my chicken caretakers are my grandkids, Katie aged 8 and Evan aged 9. How hard can chickens be if two little kids can be left in charge and do an awesome job? They even clean the poop deck for me while I'm gone because it's just like cleaning a cat litter box! And I should mention that when the kids first started caring for the chickens, I had 22 of them and the kids did an awesome job! Now down to 11 so it's a piece of cake.

i live about an hour north of Toronto. York Region area. I have a few pics of my coop but it's still in the building process. My husband is slowly working on it...I don't push him too much considering he didn't really want to get chickens in the first place and I'm just happy he's actually building it! The coop will be more than I need...its 8x8 with an attached run. The siding will be put up this weekend and the metal roof is coming next week! I will post some pics when it's done!

Thanks everyone, I feel better now.

Georgina I live in Angus, my hubby works in Nmkt. He isn't that handy so not sure about him building the coop, how many chickens are you going to have......& are u in an urban setting, & is he insulating it?

Yup! I know exactly where you are! We have several friends and family who live out that way. Have you thought about buying a shed? it can be a bit pricey but then maybe your hubby wont have to do too much to it? Just add some ventilation, nest boxes, and a roost? People on here have all kinds of ideas for DIY coops and things. I think us humans are more picky about how it looks than the chickens are! If you are only getting a few hens than you can probably get away with just a small shed.

I was only planning on getting 4 chickens but I have room for 16 with the size of the coop he is building. I wont go crazy at first..especially with winter coming (I know it's still August but you never know here in Ontario!) I want to see how it is and then maybe get a few more girls....or I kind of have my heart set on a few ducks as well :)

We do live out in the country. We have 2.5 acres. And yes he is insulating it. Our neighbor has a spray foam insulation business so he insulated it for us. not sure how many eggs I will have to give him to equal payment!? haha!
