TSC ducklings!

There were a couple of threads started in the laws section on BYC about this and it varies from state to state. I think the main goal is to prevent people from buying ducks and chicks on a whim or for Easter and then dumping them off somewhere.

Some TSC and feeds stores have gotten creative about why they can't sell less than six. One said that they had to have that minimum amount because they're a farm store and not a pet store and they're not allowed to sell animals as pets. But, like someone else said, it's more likely that they covering their behinds by doing this.

Some people suggested that one hang around the store and see if someone would be willing to split an order with them. Another choice would be to buy the 6 and when they get a little older, sell the extras to someone else.

I actually like it that they're raising the minimum this time of year because I don't want to go to the lake and rescue a bunch of little dumped duckies.

I think the number you're required to buy goes by your state laws. Here the minimum is six too.
And the TSC here goes through Mt Healthy Hatchery. Their "black australorps" aren't even all black, so uh... beware of that.

Sounds about right. It's better for people to HAVE to buy more, that way they can't buy one and then dump it because it gets older.
At least this way they have to actually think about how they'll handle six of them.

Edit:

You know what?!
The minimum is for all the birds there at this store. I bought six chicks and one duckling before. They won't let you return any birds once they leave the store for bio-security (or so they say), so needless to say that duck was raped by all of the sex-linked roosters I picked out not knowing that the females had all been fished out already. Poor Mudslide was a very confused duck, but he was tasty.
