TSC minimum purchase

It’s never a good idea to add one bird at a time to an established flock, it’s a good bet that lone chicken will get picked at unmercifully. Also 1 Silkie in a flock could be an issue as the don’t see as well, fly and look different so they can be picked on, many people that have Silkies in a mixed flock often report thier Silkies never really integrate and remain their own sub flock. If you want to add just a few I would check local swaps or CL for breeders that may have pullets in a couple of the breeds your looking for. Another option would be a mail order hatchery. Some of them you can order as few as 3-5 in a specific breed. For example crackle you can order 5 of each breed to make up the minimum shipping amount You could get a few in each breed you want, keep a few for yourself and sell the rest or go in with a friend.
The little flock has only been together for a week they came from two TSCs in my area. Maybe next year we can get a couple silkies *sigh*

There’s a feed store down the road from me that has typical small business hours but they may have some so I can check next week. They will sell to you if they know you and know you already have other chicks

im so frustrated with TSC minimum purchase of four chicks...I am selectively trying to add to my small flock and I don’t want to buy four birds I have ten at home that I fought from them. I just wanted a little white silkie I saw in store today and I wish they would find a better way to achieve their goal of not selling single chicks as Easter gifts. Maybe I’m alone in this but it is frustrating.
Our tractor supply says 6 minimum

Valid opinion too! I may just wait until next year and see how these little ones do. I was just frustrated because I get why the policy is there but in some cases it doesn’t make sense.
Sorry I had to go back, I guess I completely miss understood you original post I didn’t realize you had just purchased chicks within the week there. Ya that is frustrating as this is the best time to add just one. Did you tell them you had just purchased chicks. I would go back tomorrow and maybe someone else will be there and you can plead your case.

You could always buy the minimum and resell the extras. The minimum here is 6 chicks or 6 ducks. Even if there’s only 2 in the store they won’t let you buy them.

I thought of something else unless you bought sex linked breed you got to figure that those original 10 some are going to be Roos you can’t keep. So starting with 16 will give you a better chance of having a good hen to roo ratio. Last year I started with 13 Silkies from a breeder and ended up having to rehome 5 that turned out to be Roos.
