Tucker the puppy has gone insane

I've never needed to use the cone on any of my dogs after a spay/neuter. I've found that distraction, such as awesome irresistable things to chew on, goes a long way. I give raw beef bones. Good luck!

Or it attracts attention to the area, so that the dog wants to clean off the weird smell. Then he licks his wound too, it burns like hell, and he chews the wound up.

I got the cone of shame to stay on with his collar. He is slowly adjusting. I tried the tobasco sauce and it made him whimper and try to lick more so I wiped off the little bit I put on him. I think he has some really sensitive skin.
Right now he is just laying around sighing at me. He really knows how to play the pathetic card.

Awww poor baby. I would hate the cone too. Honestly I have only had a couple dogs neutered in my life so far and none of them wore the cone. They all licked it too. We never had an infection issue. If they were a touch red when they came home they might get a bit of ointment or even my anticeptic cure alls that are used on every animal we have. We go to a farm vet so they are pretty down to earth about these things.

The vet I have is pretty down to earth also. Gave me a syringe for my chickens, don't care that I gave puppy shots, etc. He just licks so aggressively, I'd like to give it a couple of days to heal up first. His mom in the past has licked her privates to the point she gets a skin sore when she is in heat - I don't want him to do the same thing.

They are a pair of goofballs together. I'm waiting for Sparky to figure out he can drag Tucker around by the cone. Good thing he isn't the sharpest tool in the box. It's part of his goofy charm...
Tucker on the other hand is very smart.

WIll it burn their skin? I am so gonna try this and I have some good tobasco sauce...

No it won't burn and this is how I got my son to stop sucking his thumb!

It may not sting outside the wound area, but remember that a lick is a swiping motion. it is very possible that a dog licking tabasco around a wound may spread the tabasco into the wound on the very first lick. The skin is still healing there, so I would be very leery of using that in such a sensitive area.

You may not ever go there, but our Fleet Farm (in MN) I think carries soft(ish) E-cones. Maybe he would put up with that better?

Poor boy. And poor Mommy.

Hang in there.
