Tumor or abscess or what?? Hen isn't happy.

So how do I go about removing this off her?
That's the hard part... because if it's a prolapse then removing too much is likely to kill her, because a prolapse means that either her reproductive tract or her intestines are on the outside of her body, and as you can probably imagine, removing any viable tissue of either is probably not a good thing. Honestly, it would be best to get her into see a vet.

But she says he/she (?) can see the vent and is in good condition....

Not saying she shouldn't see a vet though. Visit to my vet for a chicken is same as dog or cat, $45.

Quote: If the the vent can bee seen, then it is probably not a prolapse, but any injury in that are is very serious and is it could very easily have penetrated the abdominal cavity, and in that case, the wound is life threatening, Yes, a trip to the vet won't be cheap, but is is probably the best thing to do If this were a cat or dog with the same wound, what is the right thing to do?

When I used to work with pediatric burn patients we would do a warm whirlpool bath twice a day with a disinfectant soap. Gentle scrubbing with a rag to loosen the darkened skin was done till we got pink skin. This can be done gradually, but the more vigorous, the quicker it may help. Slight bleeding is normal doing this. I will look in again for the new picture.

I'm in agreement with you about it probably being the best thing to do.

My comment about price was meant for comparative info, to hopefully take away the fear of an outrageous price, though I realize that is still a lot for some folks. I didn't mean to indicate that chicken life has less value. Every animal should get the very best treatment you are able provide for it.

Would Epsom salt be a good bath ingredient in this case? Does it serve as antibacterial or beneficial in any way in this case.

Nice blowing it up to see some detail! And description on how to get rid of the necrotic tissue.

Ericstac, where are you located? Do you have flies out now? Now that I can see the location of the vent from Kathy's enlargement, I would agree that it looks like either a predator wound or pecking. If there are flies out, it could be infested with maggots (flystrike.) Hopefully, it is cold where you live so that would be less likely. It does look infected though. I also agree with Eggsighted 4 Life on the Epsom salt soaks. How is she doing?
