Turkens

We loved our turkens. My son got them for Easter last year and everyone thought they were ugly. Our hen was the sweetest thing, she followed me everywhere in the yard. Our rooster was definately "the king". Unfortunately, we lost both of them since. Our rooster died of unknown causes and our hen was hit by a car (the only time I ever knew of her to go near the road). She also laid everyday. Her early eggs were almost all double yolkers.

We are hoping to get more for 4H, but they are proving harder than I thought to find. The judge at last year's show really ripped hatchery chicks, so I'm afraid to buy them from there.

I LOVED my turkens. I never would have ordered them on purpose, but got 6 in my rainbow layers from McMurray. They were some of my most friendly girls, laid a lot of big eggs, and hatched out two sets of chicks for me. Their ugliness grows on you, until you think they're beautiful. I enjoyed putting one in the county fair, and standing nearby to listen to people's comments. It was really entertaining to hear all the different opinions, and people who thought it was really crossed with a turkey...

When we moved to this home, I had to re-home my whole flock. I didn't get any turkens in my next batch of rainbow layers, and I've wished ever since that I had just ordered a few specifically. I miss my naked necks!

Here's my girls:

is it just me, or are these chickens so ugly their cool. I have a freind who really likes these ugly boogers and has a breeding program for them, We rib each other all the time. maybe I should get some show girls and really show him what an ugly chicken looks like. LOL LOL

LOVE THEM!!! My girls haven't started laying yet so I cannot personally vouch for that end of the deal, yet. but I have had my girls survive trials where the other breeds didn't! If hardy fits into their description as a means of surviving a beginner bird raiser's mistakes then "HARDY" it is cause out of the 5 I ordered I still had 5 up until two weeks ago when a stoopid accident happened and a dog managed to get to my little roo Carrot Top and thus he is no longer with us. but they survived many other mistakes on my part where other breeds didn't handle my mistakes as well. AND PERSONALITY???? OMG! they are fun and funny! The biggest scare they gave me was when they gorged! themselves and there little nekkid crops virtually ballooned up to gargantuan proportions and I was ready to swear that if they don't belch soon they will either be floating neck first against the ceiling

or will explode all over everything!

They are not the least bit timid and are willing and do force their way into the mix to get what they think they deserve!
Ugly to the point of cute and no it is NOT a stage they go through.. they do NOT grow out of it! If anything they get uglier as they get older! especially if you have one like my Baldo, She is nearly naked all over.... Dunno why but her feathers are really scarce! (doesn't help that she is on the smaller side and gets picked on, so what few feathers she does have are never really in good condition.)
And for all the English teachers out there, go easy on my little essay here I know my grammar is lacking but I blame it on being tired after almost three months without a day off and trying to get year end inventory stuffs wrapped up and into the books for the year
