what do you want to chat about?

I got mad at my turkey hen. She decided to fly over my 6 ft privacy fence over the drive and into the neighbor's tree. I asked if I could shot it and he didn't want me to. He was nice and got the extension ladder and pushed the bird until she got tired of it and flew back to my property. She flew into a tree about 30ish feed off the ground. I had chased her for maybe 45 minutes at this point. She then went to freezer camp. I am sad I have one less hen but what's the point if she doesn't stay where she is suppose to?

I want a sweet breed that will stay where they are suppose to. My black Spanish are so sweet and love me. They let me hand feed them. I think I might get more of them but maybe it was because I hand raised them.........

What's not encouraging is that I had to buy a turkey for Thanksgiving this year!!! (Is talking about this year off topic?)
I hope we don't have a repeat of that in 2015!!!! (there, I brought it back around to being on topic, right???)

How many turkeys do you have?
...well... after Thanksgiving I have 2 full grown Toms with great beards (I love beards)- one full grown hen. I am fairly confident 3 juvie hens and 1 tom but last month I thought I had 1 hen and 3 toms so who knows!.

-How many poults do you plan on hatching?
as many as my hens can spit out! I love turkey babies! So precious and they sound so adorable. Turkeys are just so sweet!

-What breeds do you want/have?
Bourbon Red- I have

-where are you getting your eggs from?
eggs... what eggs... apparently my hen thinks she will freeze her heini off if she lays when its cold.

-will you be raising your turkeys for meat?
of course!!! Best meat ever! Great fat on my guys too! The only problem is that I hug them all as they are perching on the fence each night. So it's tough deciding who stays and who goes. Usually the one that stays by the hens more get's pardoned. Also the ones with the least amount of tail feathers and least pretty tail feathers gets to be dinner.

-will you be raising them for pets, etc?
I love my turkeys and hug them all but, honestly... I have them for meat. Some days I think it would be cheaper to feed the horses rather than my turkeys- I see them guys eat every morning---- OMG!

-what type of housing are you going to use for your birds?
Well.... what "type" housing that I have chosen for them and what "type" housing they have chosen for themselves are 2 completely different things/places. My turkeys had a great covered fenced area just for themselves. It wasn't good enough- they would rather perch on my fence every night in the rain/snow/cold weather.

-what will you feed them?
My turkeys get Purina or Tribute layer every morning and then it is out and about to mow the lawn and pursue their daily job as my bug exterminators!

-will you be using an incubator to hatch your eggs?
Yes, of course. You think for a minute I trust my turkeys to do what they are supposed to do... NOT!

-do you want your hens to be broody so they can hatch eggs?
Nope, I would much rather hatch them out. that way they know me and trust me and are my babies! My babies are not babies anymore so hatching is my cure for pregnancy.

-what kinds of waterers, feeders,etc will you be using?
I use heated waterers in the winter and metal and plastic feeders. In the summer just a normal plastic waterer. Of course I don't really think it matters- they drink out of the ducks/geese swimming pool when ever they get the chance

currently I have either bronze or broad breasted bronze, the farmer I bought the poults from didn't know. If I post pics can anyone tell me? What I really want though are Eastern Turkeys if anyone has anything available.

hopefully my hens

yes, I want to have a couple breeders and eat the poults

not pets as much as loved livestock

I have an elevated house that is 5' up so the goats don't keep them from getting in their shelter

My turkeys get all flock, cracked corn and scratch, just depends on time of year as to how much

I hope to have my hens hatch them out

my birds free range so they drink out of a free range water fount, eat off the ground or the trough I built in their house


As indicated above, not 100% sure of breed. Is it possible for anyone to identify from pics? If they are BBB, will they be able to breed naturally? If not I am going to butcher this fall and get some eastern turkey eggs to hatch out. I want to have a self sustainable flock and there is no sense in feeding the birds I have now if they can't reproduce, defeats my purpose for them.
