I have heritage turkey poults that are a few days old. I am a new turkey-mom, but have had chickens for a couple of years. I have learned all of the chicken calls and recognize what each means when I hear it. I enjoy knowing what each means because I feel like I can better care for them if I know, like how a mom instinctively knows the difference between her baby's cries (hungry, sleepy, in pain). For example, when the roosters make the "danger on wing" call I know to keep an eye out for for birds flying over. The quieter it is and the more still he is when he does it the larger and the more dangerous the bird is that is flying over usually is, so I know when to keep an eye out for hawks. My poults are making several sounds and I don't know what to make of them. I am hoping that some more experienced turkey owners could maybe fill me in? The one that they are doing most is a very persistent and repetitive sound that reminds me of the squeaking of something on wet glass. Like a wash cloth on a window when you clean them. It makes me think that they need something but they have everything that they need. They also do a soft trill which sounds like a happy sound. I know it is difficult to express sounds like that with words but if anyone has any more that you would care so share with me I would really appreciate it!
