Turkey can't walk on feet

Hi Backyard Chickens Forum

I have a turkey - not sure how old - could be quite old who can't walk. It was walking in a drunk way so I bought it inside for a while and gave it some supplements and wormers etc and it came good so I put it back outside again. Then it was doing the drunk walking again and so I brought it back in. It went down hill very quickly, and it's neck went limp and that night I thought it would die - but that was several nights ago and since then I've been giving it coconut water and it's got much better but still can't walk. It can flutter it's wings no problem and seems sprightly besides. I thought it might of had a stroke, but I just want to ensure it's not a nutritional deficiency or something simple like that. I've given it magnesium and multi-vitamins and also vit B.

Many thanks.

Hi there again

My turkey is making a very slow recovery but a recovery is indeed being made and it is able to walk now and stand up for long periods of time. I still have to ensure it gets water and feed so I'm keeping it inside until I'm certain it can reach it's feed and water easily. My thoughts are that it might have had a mareks attack as I didn't have my birds from young but was given them and as it's now older - it might have had a resurgence of this to a weakened immune system which I've heard can happen, if not, then it was a stroke, but the wings weren't affected so I doubted it was a stroke.

I had a chick with mareks once and just brought it inside and kept feeding it and it came good and she became my indoor chicken - well she would come home and sleep on the back of my chair at night.

It seemed that this turkey had a neurological problem - just in the legs and neurological problems take a long time to heal. I'm giving homeopathic hybericum to assist with neurological healing which is what I gave my chick who had it (after doing tons of research on the web and being told it couldn't be treated).

Turkeys do not get the same form of Marek's that chickens get. They make the Marek's vaccine for chickens from turkeys.
