Turkey congested

We gave Mr. Turk a Tylan injection this morning but he sounds very very congested. He sounds like his head is full of mucous, like he's breathing under water. We continue to believe it's upper respiratory and now feel rather pessimistic about his chances. We are thinking of squirting some down the throat for the next dose but also worry about how much damage the stress (of treatments) is doing to him too. We'll just keep trying though. I know I read (on this thread or others; I read a bunch) that some people do an injection and then do the oral down the throat so I think it would be okay to try that. Poor guy, this was very sudden but we did have all-time record lows in OK this week so it was tough on everyone. Thanks.

keep him warm and still so he can rest and he will be more likely to pull out of this. I thought my hen was dead, she sounded so bad and could hardly stand. She recouped within 4 or 5 days and has been doing well ever since. I wish you the best.

Thanks for this info deerman. I'm so glad that I read all of these posts to educate myself. I didn't know that Tylan could be given orally. I had been giving as an injection and was really never comfortable with needles. I will switch to oral dosages instead of injections. Thanks to all of the experienced BYC'ers who have experience with illnesses of animals. I'm still new and still learning.

Mr. Turk is still with us today. My husband has a phobia about dehydration so wanted to tube some water into Turk so we did that and included a dose of Tylan with it. It was easy that way. Turk is in a small area of the coop with a heater. He has a cough and still sounds very congested. However, there is either no change from yesterday or he looks a tiny bit less sick. He was starting to droop some yesterday afternoon but I don't see that now. I'll let you know the outcome. Thanks everyone.

I don't think he's been eating. We will tube feed him if needed but wanted to give the meds a chance to work. Thanks for reminding me though; we'll make a plan to do that. I have the high nutrition stuff I've used to tube ducks so it should work for Turk too. There's always something!

Tell me about it. Yes, there's always something. My poor Tom was half dead on last week. He is doing better but I still have to hand feed him. He has mashed potatoes, green beans and yogurt. I threw out treats to everyone yesterday and he was hesitant about going over to get a few. The chickens, ducks and geese were pushing him out of the way. I think he has a cataract in his right eye but that is another thread that I have to start.

Just like you said.... There's always something.

We dosed him again this morning (so this is the third dose of Tylan) and he seemed more lively and even ate a little. He does still sound very congested and still has a cough. I'll keep you posted on what we find tonight and in the morning. Thanks for asking.
