turkey egg count

Ok so I'm reading this post and commenting to my husband that we have only been seeing one of our two turkeys hens. Duh, she is sitting on a nest! We are probably seeing a diffferent hen each day and the other girl is sitting on the nest.

This is why I visit BYC everyday.

The DH is looking for the flashlight as I type. LOL

now follow her she will sneak off to her nest! they could be sitting side by side! only one problem can't protect them if you don't know where they are and some times even if you do ! 28 days is a long time for a ground nesting bird! good luck tom111

A.T. Hagan :

Mine started laying a bit over two weeks ago now.

Three hens and we're getting about three eggs a day now. Hope to put the first lot in the incubator early next week.

I made a mistake here. I have FIVE hens and am averaging three eggs per day. I wish I could get an egg a day from each hen...

I found the nest, 6 eggs. I'm going to buy a bator at TSC tomorrow. I have some many questions:

How long do I leave the eggs in the bator?
How old are the eggs, could be weeks apart?
How long have they been under her?

Really need some input.

Usually they don't start setting until they feel that there are enough eggs in the nest - usually 12 or so. Even if the eggs are weeks apart from the first to the last, they don't start developing until she starts setting. It's natures way of having the whole clutch hatch around the same time so that mom won't have to leave the nest to take earlier hatchlings out to eat. Turkey eggs take 28 days, you can candle them to see if there is any development. If she is only visiting the nest and not staying on it, chances are they haven't started developing yet.

i bought the bator at TSC and rushed home this afternoon and no hen and no eggs. DH thinks she moved them. But can a turkey move eggs? She had wallowed out a nest under a fallen tree in the nearby woods, She didn't roll out them thats for sure. The bator is doing its thing tonight, tomorrow morning I'll go out and look for her and hope I can find her nest. How long do they lay for?
