Hi I'm a long-time chicken owner but new to turkeys this year. We got two turkeys at Jenny and a come 3 months old now. Today when letting them out of the coop stretch their wings and get some exercise. I noticed the Tom Wing feather is bent to the side. I tried to smooth it down but it is stuck that direction and seems a bit tender. I don't want it to become infected or any more painful for him, but I'm not quite for sure what to do. I would be so grateful if anybody had any advice on how to help him.

I would just yank it out and let it grow a new feather..

Ouch! Do you think it will bleed a lot? Is there anything I should put on area after? Also, this might sounds silly, and I don't have an problem pulling it out. But, I've never had turkeys before and I'm not sure about there temperament. He's very sweet and affectionate to my daughters and I. So I'm wondering if he would hold a grudge or become mean and not like me anymore. Could that be an outcome? If so I'll make my husband do it. Lol

If the turkey wasn't such a pet, it would actually be easier to pull the feather. They have a defensive mechanism that allows them to painlessly release the feathers when they are under attack. Anyone trying to catch a chicken and coming away with a handful of tail or wing feathers has seen how easily the feathers can come out.

I doubt that the turkey will hold anything against the person that pulls the feather but still recommend that you have your husband pull it out. Preferably use a quick hard yank rather than a slow, steady pull.

If you were to cut the feather too short, it would bleed very much. Pulling the feather should not cause any bleeding or at least no more than minimal bleeding.

Yup^ took the words right off my message.

Oh this is what happened to one of my young turkeys a couple of days ago. I wasn't sure what to do. I gave it one good pull, at the base of the feather and it didn't budge and I didn't want to hurt him. So I left him alone and the next morning the feather had been pulled out by unknown means. Or it worked its way out. 🥰
But now I know what to do if it happens again and doesn't fall out on its own.
