Turkey Feed Question

@R2elk i got some Niacin contents back. What say you?

Chick starter feed - 28.7 mg/lb
Quick grow Broiler feed – 27.2 mg/lb
Turkey/Gamebird Finisher Pellet – 31.3 mg/lb
Layer pellet – 25.6 mg/lb

Chick Starter feed - 28.7 mg/lb = 63 ppm
Quick Grow Broiler feed - 27.2 mg/lb = 60 ppm
Turkey/Gamebird Finisher Pellet - 31.3 mg/lb = 69 ppm
Layer Pellet - 25.6 mg/lb = 56 ppm

If it was my turkeys, I would stick with the Purina Flock Raiser. The thing about The Turkey Finisher is that it is meant to finish the turkeys for processing.

I contacted Purina about Niacin levels in Flock Raiser but I have not heard back yet.

I have seven royal palms.They free roam ten acres during the day.They are all thriving.I give them corn,sunflower seeds, game bird crumbles and dry dog food.They are foragers.It may be different if yours are penned all day.Mealworms at night one small cup they share but love.

If you want long term healthy turkeys, keep the corn, sunflower seed, and mealworms to a minimum. They are fine as treats or fattening up before processing. As treats, all combined together should not exceed 10% of their diet.

As great as free ranging is, the value depends largely on one's location, time of year and diversity of forage.
A flock of turkeys won't find the same things to eat in November in North Dakota as they will in Louisiana.
Where are you located?

Is the Purina Flock Raiser adequate nutrition for all fowl/waterfowl across the board? I have ducks, chickens, guinea, and quail. I know I've been feeding too much grain/scratch/corn/worms but they HATE the layer pellets, and will try to wipe out all of the gamebird starter/grower crumble that's out for the younger ones. Any suggestions?

In all fairness it is called Grower/Finisher so not sure if that makes a difference.

It has sufficient niacin to be good for most waterfowl. It has high enough levels of lysine and methionine to be suitable for guineas, quail and turkeys. None of the levels are too high for chickens.

I believe Pekin ducks need a higher level of niacin but that can be supplemented with Brewer's yeast or a good vitamin B complex.

Real turkey grower is typically 24% protein with higher levels of lysine, methionine and niacin. I used turkey finisher for years when I was raising BB turkeys for processing. They finished up very nicely. Now I use an all flock feed for all of my adult poultry.
