We just got 1 tom and 2 hens we are going to use a our base breeding birds. The are Heritage Blue Slate and 2 may have some Narragansett from grandparents. So far the Tom (which is also his name) gobbles and struts. the pearl grey hen makes soft clucking sounds. Since they just arrived about 3 hours ago I know I have much to learn.

About a week or two before Thanksgiving I had a neighbor ask if one of my chickens got out, as she saw a bird wandering the next block over... I grabbed some feed and headed out, thinking.. " How would one of MY chickens get out??" As I rounded the corner of the block there it was... a white Turkey.. I walked around and it scurried away, I threw feed, it scurried away.. I thought well screw this! As I considered leaving the neighbor behind me came out in complete shock I was standing in his yard with a turkey not 6 feet away. "It's not mine!" I blurted out, "Just thought I'd put it in with my chickens so the coyotes don't get it" - he then helped me chase down the bird until she got tired and in ran into a huge shrub. All of us exhausted chasing it though the neighborhood, I crawled in and pulled it out by its feet. So.... we now have a rescue turkey. What I don't get about her, is every night she makes this loud almost honking-like noise, right at dusk. She is ten times louder than any rooster we've had but since she's a game bird, no one can do anything about it.. Does anyone know why she makes this awkward and almost panic - sound? Kinda funny that she's legal and the rooster isn't... And maybe, does anyone know what kind she could be? This is the best picture I have so far, she doesn't like when we get too close to her.

That looks like a guinea fowl to me.

It is a guinea.

Also from what I have read up on about Guinea is that they are very noisy, much noisier than other fowl, like you said even roosters. They will continue with those loud calls. You should post your guniea in the guinea section to try to learn more about it. Do you know whether it is male or female yet? Are you getting any eggs yet?

I actually have just been reading after another post I made and similar response. She is so very much a Guinea.. and after reading sounds like a female still.. but I have to wait to catch her (at night) and do some assessing. Probably cut back the Turkey and just leave it at 'Lurkey' !
Thanks everyone! - this really explains a lot about why she is the way she is!

She is a wild turkey. Have them here in Florida.

I can't tell which post you are referring to but if it is the following post, it is definitely a guinea as has been previously pointed out.

Turkeys are very vocal. Hens yelp, cutt, cackle, purr, cluck, putt. They yelp to communicate with other turkeys. Hen yelps can vary in volume from very soft yelps when she is waking up on the roost to very loud yelps when she is calling to other turkeys or letting the other hens know she is the boss hen. Cutting is is the sound an excited hen makes most often when she is going to the gobbler or approaching other turkeys. The hens often let out a cackling sound when flying off the roost and sometimes when flying up. soft clucks and purrs are usually sounds you hear a contented hen make when she is feeding or foraging around with her poults. An alarmed turkey will putt loudly. Both the hens and gobblers will make this sounds and it is a sound no turkey hunter wants to hear during the hunt as it usually means you have been spotted and the warning is going out to every other turkey within hearing range.

The toms will drum, spit, gobble and putt loudly when alarmed. In the wild toms gobble to call hens to them but it seems to me the domestic turkeys just like to gobble to be gobbling. I have never heard a tame turkey do it but a wild tom will often approach a hunter making a pop sound which I think is a locator call of some sort. I have only heard it when an approaching wild tom has gone silent and is slipping in to where a hunter has been calling from.

I have had a few tame toms hiss at me when I have picked them up and broody hens will hiss when you disturb them on the nest.
What about growling. My Tom just side attacked my son and I’m not sure why? How to make sure my turkeys stall nice? He’s always gobbling and making thumping sounds at us and we’ve been nothing but loving to him

Does the yelp sound like a bark? My chocolate hens make the loudest bark type vocalization just before they go to roost. Inside the barn it's very very loud.

I'm trying to figure out what to call their different vocalizations Your post is very helpful.

One other question, what is the sound both the hens and toms make just before and during a fight? It's very distinct.
