Turkey Starter for new chicks?

I don't buy into the early development echoing speech. A feed that has a higher fat content is essential for a broiler; however, higher protein foods should not logically cause any animal to develop too soon. If we feed our children higher protein, then we should not expect them to reach premature maturation. A higher fat and protein diet increases cell respiration. Excess energy is expelled naturally by a free ranging animal, all unused energy is stored and does not logically lead to early development.

Of course this is just analytical rhetoric and I don't have the means to back this up with actual data. I will stick with the GBS and I will let you know when one keels over.

oh ok I understand. Ill get some chick starter. Is that what its called?

Yes. It's pretty easy to find too. Heck even Walmart has some in their pet aisle. I like to use that for a few weeks because it's medicated and helps them fight off any Cocci infection that they might be building up from the hatchery. One bag will last 6 birds for at least 2 weeks. Then they start gobbling food like monsters, so I switch to Zamzows feed.

I hope that helps

I also feed GBS to my chicks, with no ill effects. Any chicks not hatched here are given medicated chick starter. But for chicks I have outside with the flock its easier to feed the GBS. I don't have to worry about my layers getting into the medicated stuff. I hatched 48 chicks at home last year and fed it to all of them. They didn't reach maturity any sooner: my EEs still took forever to lay. Of all the extra roos we processed from those chicks, none were fatty or had any problems whatsoever. Good luck with whatever decision you make, and with your new chicks.

I appreciate you sharing. I think Im going to do what your doing. Its easier at this point and I think your right.

I have 11 chicks 4 weeks olds, black and red sex links and barred rocks. They were on chick starter (18%) for the first 4 weeks. I also have 8 pearl guineas that were on 27% turkey starter. They are now all together so I have have mixed the remainder of their feed together. They seem to be doing just fine.

Great to know! I've got 24% turkey/quail starter, and so far I've had no issues. They appear to love it! :)

I'll keep an eye on them and compare their development to any chicks I have in the future on chicken chick feed.
