Hello everyone,

I have a pet turkey I love dearly.
I discovered this puncture wound today. She's been acting totally normal and because it was on the underside I'm guessing she's had it a while and I just saw it today because she was in an unusual position. I could almost guarantee it's from a rooster as she tends to hassle them in the spring. We pulled spurs but either that wasn't enough or this happened before that. I believe the yellow on her feathers is yolk (possibly from a broken egg in the coop?) and inside is filled with a dark yellow I am guessing is infection? It's deep and has hardness around it like scar tissue. Could it be a ruptured ancess or is it just an infected open wound? What is the hard tissue around it?

We dressed it by squirting hydrogen peroxide/water mix in to clean it out, followed by an iodine water mix. Then filled it with neosporin, a gauze patch with medical tape around it and then wrapped it with self adhesive tape to hold it on as she rubs that part when lying down a lot.

Thankfully she didn't show any discomfort through all of it and I planned on redressing like every day or every other day? I don't know where to go from here. Any help on what to do next would be greatly appreciated!

Side note, we began keeping a flock of chickens several years ago but adopted her when someone dropped her off at my grandpa's farm. He was too old to care for her and she was roaming the neighborhood. I only say that to preface that I didn't get her as a pet knowing I didn't have the resources to vet her. She just needed a home and had no where to go and I took her in, then fell in love with her. Anyway, I cannot find a vet who will see her and the couple that can can are far away and out of my ability to pay for so I have to care for her myself.

She needs the would to be tended and she needs to be on an oral antibiotic for the deep puncture wound. If I knew what your location is, I could suggest a source for the antibiotic.

You need to debride the wound, clean it thoroughly, and pack it generously with antibiotic ointment. The hard crust around the perimeter of the wound is called granulation. Wounds grow new tissue from the outside toward the center. Keep the wound cleaned daily and keep ointment on it to keep it moist so new tissue will grow quickly.

Thank you! We did this today and I will keep doing it daily. Not sure where to find the antibiotic. We are in northwest Ohio.
