Turkey with Leg Issues- Pics and Video-Please Help!

Quote:
The problem with my poult was not an enlarged hock. I had been feeding the poult high protien game bird starter/grower since it hatched and it was not a BBB or other heavy breed. The problem seemed to be near the hip area. I am pretty sure it was an injury to that joint that caused my problem. Not sure about the OP's bird though.

well.. it doesn't have to be an enlarged hock.. it's also where the leg shoots off to the side or backwards at the hock joint... (the nutritional deficiency doesn't just affect Broad breasted or heavy breeds. I've seen it happen in heritage birds too)

However... if it's at the hip joint then it's another issue altogether.. which is why I put it as an FYI since i didnt know for sure the exact location of the problem.. just thought it could have been a possibility if yours was at the hock joint and not at the hip..

How old is the turkey?
I start mine off on high protein gamebird starter (28% is the best i can get).. after a few weeks I drop them down to 26%.. at 3 months of age I drop them down to 22% grower-finisher feed

Miss Lydia thanks for the info! The leg issue is a recent development, probably three weeks now. Its just slowly getting worse.

Again thanks all for your advice and thought!

My Girl is not getting any better. Actually her spirit now seems to be suffering. She just looks tired all the time and sad in her eyes. Every night she makes it to the top of the chicken coop (about 10ft off the ground) so she still must have some strength left. She is eating normally and lets me pick her up to move the leg. The problem seems to be high up in the joint which is why splinting has not worked. Interesting the side of her body with the bad leg also has a droopy wing. I wonder if it could be a neurological issue. Its like that entire side of her body has been effected by a stroke or something.
Any more thoughts?

I am so sad to hear about this beautiful turkey. I wish I knew what is wrong with her to try to help you. So very sorry.

Thanks KuntryGirl, Lovely pic of your turkey! Have any of your birds had a severe leg problem? I really do not want to cull her, but she looks so sad by the end of the day (after wobbling around on it all day) I worry about my girl! Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
