Hello, my son and I are new to turkeys and I really need some help. We have a tom and a hen and they have been good together since we got them last April. I noticed a week or two ago the male was trying to mount the hen, she was willing but the two times I saw him he wasnt quite understanding the process lol. I don't know if he was ever successful.
3 or 4 days ago my son moved the hen to a different pen because he said they were fighting. Everyday I would tell him he needed to put her back but he insisted they would fight. Finally I put her back into their pen, as soon as she came in they were in a standoff. They both puffed up their feathers and were butting up against each other, he started kicking her then she bit onto his wattle and wouldn't let go. When I got them separated I moved her out of the pen, she was being stubborn and wouldnt walk and I had to carry her lol. Today when I checked her food and water she has laid her first egg.
So my question is: is this normal behavior and I should let them fight it out to see who's boss? Is she just being hormonal and needs some space? Can they ever be kept together again?
TIA for any help

The more you interfere with their fight, the longer it is going to take them to settle their differences. I had a tom and hen fight constantly during all the daylight hours for three straight days before they finally settled their issues.

Oh, and you are going to hear this a million times. We are saying it because it’s important. You need more hens.

We started with 3 chicks and they were all sold as hens, we were bummed thru didn't have any time. Bit two ended up being toms, one was thanksgiving dinner because they fought. We hope to get more hens this spring.

Great, thank you, I just wanted to know they wont fight till death or get seriously injured.
Turkeys rarely fight to the death. Injuries can and do occur but usually heal quickly without any human interference.

As you have found out, sexing day old poults is nothing more than a guessing game unless you are dealing with sex linked varieties.
