Turkeys For 2013

I was talking with a good friend of mine Robbie, who is THE QUAIL GURU (Owner of James-Marie Quail Farm in Church Point, Louisiana - http://www.jamesmariefarms.com/ ) on yesterday evening and I was sharing with him some of my horror stories about a couple of people who bought some turkeys eggs and were clueless on incubating, hatching and caring. I LOVE talking with this man because he knows SO MUCH about any type of bird that you can imagine. I always learn something when I talk to Robbie. Well, during our conversation, he gave me a couple more tips for caring for poults and I wanted to share them with you all. I will copy of paste them into the care sheet, so all of this will be in one place for everyone to see.

TIP #1
As far as trying to get poults to eat, he said that you can get a hand mirror and place and secure the mirror in the brooder. You would want to place the handle upwards and allow the top of the mirror to rest on the brooder floor. Make sure that is is VERY secure so that it does not fall on the poults. You would then get a crumble/water mixture (mash) and stick some to the mirror (beak/eye level for the poult). The poults will look into the mirror and see their reflection and think that it is another poult and begin pecking the mirror. Pecking the mirror will allow the poult to peck on the mash and take the feed.

TIP #2
I have always used aluminum foil to place the feed on so that the poults would see the reflection and peck at the feed. I had been looking for some type of silver/tin container to put the feed in but for the life of me, I could not think of what I could get. Well Robbie mentioned to me about the small pie tins. He said that you can secure the tin pan (with tape on the bottom) to the brooder. Again, they will see the reflection and peck at the tin pan and should begin to eat.

I hope that these tips will help others. As I talk with more experienced people and I get tips about things, I will continue to post so that we all will know how to properly care for our birds.

Knowledge is power. :)

Where do you have them? Inside? Outside? Garage? Bedroom? What kind of bedding are the on?

It's in my garage with no bedding just elevated wire

If they are sneezing a lot, then that sounds like they have come down with a respiratory problem. You could start them with an electrolyte pack and monitor the sneezing.

How old are they?

Umm my poult has started sneezing a lot today... Is that bad I've never seen or heard of a bird sneezing
How are they doing? You didn't say if their eyes were mucus-y or tearing? Are their noses wet or runny? Sinus' or eye's swollen? I just googled and found all kinds things. How many poults do you have? I'm hoping that someone with more experience than I can answer for you. I'm having problems with poults right after they hatch but just read where I could have bacteria in the incubator (mine seems to be more neurological)

Do you think that their sneezing is "not normal". Sneezing can occur due to dust from bedding. If sneezing seems to be excessive and there are other symptoms involved such as the things that Sally8 mentioned then your poults are probably sick and may need to be treated with something.

I will wait to hear your reply to Sally8 before I make a recommendation.

Found this on my fb page. Apparently, we aren't the only one's upset over the way babies are being treated.

We have been getting an astounding number of calls for help from folks all over the USA, asking:
"HOW DO I RAISE THE DUCKLINGS AND CHICKS I PURCHASED AT MY LOCAL FEED STORE OR BIG BOX FARM SUPPLY STORE?"

... Please, if you are going to raise baby chicks, ducks, or ANY animal for that matter, please do your research. There are books, articles, GOOGLE and more to help with questions ..
DO NOT wait until you get them home to ask how to raise them. We welcome your calls and will do all we can to assist you. These little ones deserve the best care and homes they can get. But being prepared and educated prior to purchase is best.
PLEASE, do your research, ask questions and be prepared before your purchase of baby chicks or other animals.
Thank You
