Turkeys For 2013

My vote would be no.  I'm not exactly sure why you would want to, maybe to try to condition them?  Anyway, my grandfather, way back in the 1920's would never let his poults feet touch the ground until they got to a certain age.  My mother can't remember just how long.  I think I'll try to do a little research in that and get back.  I know some thing's are like urban legends.  Something we do because our parents and grandparents do.

That reminds me of the young newlywed who was fixing pot roast for dinner one night.  Her husband asked her why she was cutting the end off the pot roast before putting it in the pan.  She said, ' This is the way my mom fixed it.  I will ask her why.'  The next day she called her mom and asked her.  Her mom said, ' Well that is the way my mom fixed it.  I will call and ask her.'  So she called her mom and asked her.  The newlywed's grandmother reply:  'My pan was too small, so I had to cut the end off to make it fit.'   :lau

I LOVE IT!! That was a good one!!

Made my day. I needed that laugh.

30 days is long enough. If it were me, I would gently crack it open and help it out (hoping that it is still alive). But that's just me. Some people say that if it is too weak to get out of the shell, it will be a weak turkey/breed and you may not want that trait in your flock. I, on the other hand, only care about saving the bird . So, that is what I would do.

Thanks, I just pulled the shell away, it kicked itself out after opening up the top, the yolk was completely absorbed but the cord is still attached to the eggs. :hugs Thank you so much you just saved a little life. :thumbsup   I'm so thankful you responded so quickly I was going to let it go another day. It seems strong enough and there was not serious blood just the traces that are normally there after hatching.

How is our solider doing this morning? :D

I'm not exactly sure why you would want to,

To expose them early to microorganisms in my soil, so that it's not so much of a shock to their systems when they do finally go outside. They'll be out there eating grass and bugs when they're older, why not when they're younger? Also, to give them something to do. I plan to do this with chicks, and figured I'd seek advice from someone with a lot of poult experience as to whether or not it can be done.

I'm okay with "don't", just please have an explanation as to why. I'm a naturalist, the scientist side of me always asks why. ;)

ITS STILL SNOWING HERE!

Blech! You can keep it. It's been in the mid sixties and gorgeous here for about the last week.

I'm the same way. I HAVE to know why. You just can't tell me NOT to do something and not explain. My parents hated that when I was a child. I had too many questions for them. :lau

It is ALWAYS good to ask questions, questions, questions, to know why why why. My friends HATE me for that. :gig

Please let me know if you have ANY questions. Did that kinda clear it up about not putting them on the ground too early?

Sure did. Thank you! The cute momma/baby pics made my morning, too. There's never been poultry on this ground, but I'm starting to understand just how much more fragile than chicks these little ones are. I won't expose them to any unnecessary risk.

I was always one of those "why?" kids too. It got to where the answer from my parents was, "because!". I loved my grandpa, he'd explain all those things that made me curious, in great detail. We hayed with a team of belgians, so there was plenty of time for that. :)

Great!!

I can't tell you how many customers have contacted me to tell me that they lost poults (from the eggs that they got from me). When I start asking questions on how they raised them, the answers quickly told me that they failed to do what they should have done to care for them and keep them alive. And the crazy thing is that they come back and ask me how many poults have I lost. And when I tell them NONE, they look at me with confusion and amazement in their eyes. Well, you asked me and I told you. And this is why, I will start handing them a care sheet. I hate sending my eggs/animals on a suicide mission. That hurts my heart.

LOL @ parents told you"because". :lau Gotta love grandpa for taking time with you. :love

My motto is better safe than sorry, so I won't be putting my poults on the ground for a while. I copied your care sheet and pasted it to a tutorial on my website and I"m going to print a word document of it off for all my customers. Thanks KUNTRYGIRL your 'da bomb'
