Turkeys For 2013

Tried putting my Rio Grandes in the run for a few hours with the chickens. (1mo sexlinks) and the chicks pretty much ganged up on the poor turkeys and had to be removed back to the brooder. *sad*. The Turks do like to be outside more though. I usually just leave the box out on the patio in the shade so they can sing away and not drive me nuts! lol. Also, those guys love insects. A keen eye and a fast attack leads to good little treats for them.

fast lil buggers! I was terrified he would be stung, he knew what to do! Mashed that bug on the sidewalk several times and had it swallowed before I got to him!

The baby didn't make it

I think the extreme stress of being so injured and losing blood at just 2 days old was too much for it. He lived through the night, and accepted more sugar water throughout the day, but died sometime in the past few hours, he kept acting weaker and weaker. I kind of think one of his legs was either broken or dislocated at the hip, as he never stood up and kind of kept the leg stretched out behind him. The other 3 poults are doing well. I kicked out the broody housed next to them who did this. I don't want a hen that aggressive raising any chicks for me.

I am so sorry. Glad the other 3 are ok.

LOOKIE LOOKIE!!! I got a surprise colored poult!!!

Looks all white/yellow, with a light grey strip on it's back... but I can't tell for sure, it's still too wet. No clue where the genes for this poult came from, lol (if anybody can explain, please do... parents are a Narri Jake covering a Narri Hen and 2 Black Mottled Hens... all out of shipped eggs from a Blue Slate Tom X Narri Hen pair from last season).


I also hatched 5 Black (mottled?) poults and 4 Narragansett looking poults. There are 2 pipped eggs still left in the hatcher, and I so hope they hatch out as something else new overnight. More pics tomorrow after everybody is dry, fluffed and in the brooder...

Looks like your blue genes showed up. Not saying it is a blue slate but it does appear to have the blue coloring. Bob

Thanks kuntrygirl! All 12 out of the 12 eggs I put into lock-down hatched, way better than I expected. I borrowed your aluminium foil trick... they aren't eating much yet but it works great to getting their attention, even for the keets.

I hatched a 2nd light colored poult late last night/early this AM (front left in the pic), and it looks like it has a little more grey/blue on it's back than the first one. I figured the light color hatching was blue gene related, I was just really surprised to see anything else but Blacks and Narragansetts pop out of this hatch (tho I think one might be a Bronze, not sure). Will be interesting to see how these light poults feather out... they are all mutts, so who knows, lol.


The Black poult in the cup on the right has a leg coordination issue. If it falls over or gets knocked over it struggles to get up and ends up with a leg stretched out behind it. Then it gives up on trying and just lays there. Not on it's back, just on it's side (which is just as bad). So it's gettin' some cup therapy (doing lots of squats, lol) to hopefully strengthen that leg. Once it's on it's feet it does fine and trucks all over the hatcher, but if it falls over or gets knocked over it doesn't get back up once that leg ends up out behind it. Hopefully this fixes it. Probably freezer candidate #1 tho... even if I have to keep standing him/her back up 10 times a day for 6 months, lol.

I gave them some GroGel after I took this pic... needless to say everybody is wearin' it, and the brooder no longer looks this tidy, lol. They loved it tho.
