Turkeys For 2013

Yup. I am finding that they are very social animals. Whenever I was not in earshot or view they would call out very loudly. I ended just spending time with them while in the kitchen and taking them outside with me while doing yardwork. I do cover the brooder with wire so they do not have an unexpected visitor while I'm not looking. We have tile floors and while messing around in the kitchen, they usually would just walk along with me and explore everything. BTW, they love cereal. Just keep a paper towel handy, if ya know what I mean. hehe.

I'll try moving the brooder up to where I am working and see if having me visible quiets them down. Thanks for the advice.

Definitely they are upset by something.

Mine are fairly quiet until I hear the emergency call, and someone has jumped out and is lost in the house ( which means anywhere outside the brooder box!)

Recheck all the obvious--and if it is the missing mom, give them time to adjust to life without the most important person in their life and perhaps YOU can fill that void and have friends for life.

Here are a couple things you may have already checked:

Warm water and everyone can access it
right sized food
feed bowl full
mine like to have a section of brooder covered by a pizza box-- when I remove it they go crazy
draft from an open door ?

Keep us posted-- they may just need time to adjust to their new home. Mine are usually a little noisier than my chicks.

I think I have all this covered, but I'll go through this checklist again when I get home. Better safe than sorry!

Most recent hatch complete. 14 eggs out of 15 hatched, one was a quitter. 2 chicks that hatched soon after died from unknown reasons. My mother turkey is so happy and proud of her 12 little ones. She certainly has her hands..er..wings full! These babies are all over the place. There are several variations in color in this hatch. Some seem 'dark' bronze, some seem 'light' bronze, some are pure yellow, some are yellow with a pale stripe on their back. Excited to see them grow up

She's making all sorts of noises I've never heard before, including a strange gobbling noise!

Rocker HEn-- nice to see a diligent momma hen with her tiny poults. Love th pic of hen leading the poults.

On another note-- I rearranged pens yesterday, moving 2 narri toms in with the pen of auburn toms. Immediately two auburns started fighting, and several went after the narri. In moments the chasing of the new birds stopped but the two tom were still at it. Actually, one was instigating and the other was trying to avoid the fight. He was pretty beat up, so I removed him for the night, then return him to the outside of the pen for the day. I put him in for the night and I and PRAYING he will be alright.

WTH is going on?
