Turkeys For 2013

You are making me hungry!!! I always love a roasted turkey-- so many ways though to cook a turkey . . . .

I look at the narrigansetts and think "wow, they are huge and would make a great dinner" BUt honestly I am liking the growth on the cross breds that are sired by the narrigansetts. I think keeping feed always available for them might get them into the freezer faster!! lol

I just love turkey any kind of way! I think the one baby Narraganset is a girl. But this spring my Alfa male will have the Black hen till my baby is grown is she turns out to be a hen like I think she will. But I have free feeders set up in my pens for my birds and turkey so they can eat anytime they want. But I know you free range. So I don't know. But I do know that one of the articles I read on raising turkey said a couple weeks before you butcher to freely feed them corn! It will pack on the weight.

Okay, the trio from Aunt Kat and my original 7...

Original 7 - 2 BBBs by the feeder are the deformed ones. I am hoping to get them processed next week. The one is easily 10-12lbs. The other is a lightweight - about 8lbs.

The Black Spanish trio from Aunt Kat. They are in quarantine but I allowed them to run my 12x24 shed while I swept and ran the sweeper in there today.

Your turkey are so beautiful

Lol, I don't even know where I could buy organic feed in this area!

-Kathy

Years ago there weren't any, or hardly any, feed stores in Tucson that carried organic feed. Now quite a few of them do, due to customer demand. I keep a lot of birds, so I have my feed shipped in on a pallet from Modesto Milling in CA. They are a lot closer to you than me!! I bet there are places near you that sell organic feed, you would just have to call around.

Corn will pack on the fat-- I love to eat fat, but a fattened bird is too much fat IMO.

Plenty of fat on the chest of the boys that are a year old!!! Helps keep the breast meat moist. My youngsters are only 4 months and eating the 22% feed keeps them growing. THis morning everyone was "starving" so I caved and poured out pellets right away. lol ALlowed me to excape and drive my kids to the bus stop. lol

ps-- syrup is almost gone!!!

That came from old timer turkey farmers and they sold all their turkeys. I guess that is why. I keep my birds on a high protein diet also. I am glad ya'll like the syrup. I took down my ad for it because I got sick and could hardly manage just tending my birds. But if anyone wants some and lets me know I can make some. I will be making some for my family before Christmas.
