Turkeys For 2013

Not certain if this is the appropriate place for this, I'm new, but question follows:

I just got my very first batch of turkeys. Bourbon reds with possibly one or two bronzes. three-four weeks old, 14 of them a few days ago...

Two days ago I let them all outside into a little yard around their coop only one wasn't as eager to go outside. Should have been a red flag but I just figured it was being a dope.

Then, yesterday morning, the same (I presume) bird was lying listlessly under the heat lamp, didn't particularly struggle when I went to grab it and was making this weird hiccup-y coughing sound. I put some vitamins in the water and intended to go back in the afternoon with some herbal tea and an essential oil mixture my friend uses on her chickens - only the bird was dead as a doornail.

All my others look bright and shiny, but this happened so quick, any idea what it could be?

Thanks a lot!!

Try to get electrolites into the baby. make sure its warm enough, brooder needs to be 95 degrees. Poults dont usually try if they are ill they give up, so you have to help it. Polyvisol infant drops WITHOUT IRON for humans may give a boost too. Good luck
ETA watch for red/bloody stools. if they are fluffed and huddled, it could be cocci.

Been up all night, we lost power due to the thunderstorms. I am just sick over it. Carried the incubators to the truck to keep them warm, the inverter won't support all of them. We have a generator thing that would not start. Battery backup failed in 2 hours. I have 3 full of geese duck quail turkey and guinea.. oh my

over 200 birds! I buried the bators in blankets, and I hope it didn't harm my chicks. We were without power about 5 hours

Just sick over it, we had all the right stuff, but most of it failed. Ugh! I feel so hopeless, you do all the planning and it doesn't work when you need it.

Is there any hope for the eggs or have I just lost all of my babies?
You did every thing you could do-- now you wait and see the results.

5 hours is not a long time. So keep cooking those eggs and see what lockdown brings.

Like all babies, poults can go down hill fast. You actually need to force feed them if they are to survive. Sorry this one didn't make it. How are the others doing??? IT doesn't have to be a disease for the poult to fial to thrive. Stress comes in many disguises.

Attended a swap today. Not a big turnout but still I made my gas money to get home. THe last customer wanted tiny poults as soon as she heard "sweetgrass"-- her devoted hen is incubating an unfertile egg, so hoping to make a switch. I'm praying this is sucessful-- I mentioned that I use vicks on the nose of ewes when grafting lambs. Wonder if it works with turkeys . . . ?

I have five poults left. The rest were sold. I did have one casualty but it happens. One of my chicks has been laying down a lot. All of them including this poult run and play a lot but when we return to the brooder he will eat them sit and watch everyone else inside. Does not go to sleep only on occasions and usually with all of the chicks. Any ideas?

[/quoteI had a similar occurrence. I had one chick who just slept and slept in or outside. He was outside with me one day then he died that night

thank you everyone for the support, I think we are ok. Update, 3 poults are now hatched and dry, another has pipped. I did a fast add sponges and closed back up. I have talked to soo many people, everyone thinks they should sill hatch if they are strong poults, and the first 3 are definitely that! DH is insisting now that we buy the sportsman cabinet next year, and a bigger backup. I am a little ticked at myself, I had a kerosene heating in the garage and didn't even think about it!

How sweet! Hopefully it will work on the turkey!
