Turkeys For 2013

I have had chickens and turkeys for 1 1/2 years and they have all done fine together. My turkeys love to be around the chickens. When I let the turkeys out to free range they end up hanging around the chicken yard all day.
Thank goodness! I was hoping that wouldn't change as they got older. They seem to being doing Ok but I did notice only certain chickens are allowed to roost next to them.

THe turkeys are such pests!! lol Love them though.

So, do turkeys not do well with chickens? I have mine with the chickens and so far things are OK. Is this something to look out for as they get older? Actually one of my tiniest roosters is trying to boss them around.
I have a lot of space for them to run away but squirmishes do break out. I even have hens spatting over space at times--- chicken hens fighting like roosters!! And a muscovy duck ( male) that waddles after the turkeys pulling/ breaking tail feathers!!. THey have acres to roam over but tend to hang out at my house!

LOL...they must know the treats come from the house.

I just seen this morning that mine are trying to get in the nests after the eggs. I hope they aren't egg eaters.

I think it's because house was their first home and I was the mom raising them. LOL I would like them to go see the world now . . . . .

Mine dont touch the eggs.

Hello friends! From PA over here!!! Recently inherited a flock of Black Spanish that invaded my little farm and after finding out who the owner was, they said they didn't want them and I could have them. Thus begins my crash course on raising turkeys. They are very tame and lovable. this is a very bad area for roaming, so they have a pen and will have a run by the time today is over.
After finding good homes for some, and keeping 2 girls and a Tom for myself, I still have 4 toms and am trying to find out if I can keep them peacefully somehow.
Anybody have more than 1 tom, and do they hurt each other?
Here is a couple glimpses of how this all came about.

Hi, how nice of them to give you all those turkeys! Kind of crazy bet hey, you get some free turkey lol. I' new to turkeys as well. Mine were also given to me by our neighbor. He planned on giving us one for thanksgiving and one for Christmas. He said it made no difference to him if we wanted them alive lol, so they live! And are trying to mate, their story is about a page back. Anyway enjoy you turkeys!
I have five Blue Slate and they harass the chickens every chance they get. If they catch them, they stomp them.
Yes, mine too. I have only 2 standard bronze. The turkey hen actually broke the beak of one of my chickens, so they now have their own pen. I just don't want my chickens to get hurt.

Do they get in the road? Several months ago mine went out on our county road, people were stopping taking pic's with their cell phones, like they've never seen a turkey before. We live way out in the country!

Welcome to the world of turkeys!!!

YOu can investigate using poultry netting to contain them somewhat and keep out the predators mostly.

Boys raised to gether manage to stay peaceful most of the time. During breeding season can be an issue.

My boys fight when one gets stuck on the wrong side of the fence for a few hours, or one donsn;t make it over the fence to cruise with the boys for the day. WHen they all meet up again, pecking order is re-established.

HOnestly, keep a few and sell the others or considered the freezer for the extras. The meat is far different than what the grocery store sells.

Welcome to the thread!

Lo. That sounds like us! Well not with the turkeys in the road, but the camera. We went apple picking Monday. And on our way down the back roads, we had to stop for a mini donkey in the road. He wouldn't move. I got out and had to walk up the the farm house, his mama was on her way out with the carrots. He saw that orange bage and ran so fast towards her. She went to the barn and open the door ever so slowly, then it busted open and 4 HUGE horses come trotting out. They all went towards the road, and this little donkey corralled them and sent them on their way. The owner said that little donkey rules those huge horses, but likes to sneak out. So I get back to the car, and my daughters are laughing about the donkey in the road and the pics they got lol.
