nice info everyone, thank you! While I like my chicken nipples, its becoming obvious the birds like other methods for water better! I guess I will buy one of these! I'm glad I'm viewing these chickens more as pets than a cost saving plan, because they are getting PRICY! lol spoiled chickens

I hope I didn't leafe you with the wrong impression-- my birds to just fine on the nipple waterers, and I will be using more of them. Just need to p lan for dripping. Maybe a little plumbers tape before screwing in, and using a thicker plastic and putting in a locatin where dripping is not a problem. I loved not having to dump every day to clean-- just refill and add dash of vinegar and it stayed fresh.

Yes you do get some dripping with the nipple waterer system and the plumbers tape on the threads does help with that. Mine are all outside in my run so I don't worry much with an occasional drip. I originally thought with my 55 gallon barrel that I would catch rainwater thus having no additional water cost. Well I built the system in June and it didn't rain that year for several weeks. Plus my chicken pens are under and grove of cedar trees so not a lot of rain actually ever made it to my barrel when it did rain. So I just fill mine about once a month with a hose. I also use the vinegar in mine. I bought these "bucket waterers" because we go on vacation a couple times a year for maybe several days and a few of my juvi chickens haven't quite figured out the nipple waterers. So they are really just to supplement my main water source when. But they work great. They last more than a week so far.

I do think that having multipe water sources is a great idea when you are not home to check on things.

The chickens do seem to like drinking from a water source where they can see the water and gulp it down. I use the drinker waterer cups because they have the benefits of nipples and the chickens really like them.

Do you have to use a pressure reducer valve with the drinking cups? Seems like I read about that once before. I like the look of cups but have never used them.

Here is an alternative idea.
These nipples don't leak. The float valve is all brass and much cheaper than a pressure valve. Unlike a pressure valve these can be repaired if necessary with a new O ring. More info. if you send a PM
